Never heard her on the tennis 606 radio 5 live. Mac is always on
By:
Both knowledgeable but MeEnroe always interesting whilst she's quite boring.
By:
That's wrong, McEnroe was`able to attract that salary because of who he was, because of his name and what he represented in relation to tennis and Wimbledon in particular and British tennis fans and casual part time tennis watchers alike as much as his ability
So that's ok as well |
By:
* op wrong
By:
No, you’re wrong. One could easily argue that she has much more of a ‘Wimbledon pedigree’ than McEnroe.

By:
macs in a lg of his own pundit wise,he,s contracted solely to the bbc for the fortnight does 2 ****,does 5 set matches, she,s free to work elsewhere does about 3 ,3 set matches in a fortnight and is more liable to turn viewers off than on,at 15 grand she,s robbing them blind, mcenroe charges 25 grand for 1 after dinner speech so is selling himself short at the bbc,
By:
He gets that because of who he is, not because of what he knows.
yes he,s quite good, but so is she. |
By:
He would have always been able to attract that salary simply because of his past playing career , and not because he was a fabulous player, although he was
By:
mcenroe will doubtless get more than other male commentators too
no doubt michael johnson is well paid to commentate on athletics they are brilliant commentators |
By:
he,s doing at least 7 more times work than her in a fortnight, simples
if this is the best panorama can drag up to try and prove a gender pay gap its a pretty dismal effort |
By:
has she played any 'cards' yet?
By:
He is not being paid that salary because of the amount of hours he puts in
By:
so he,s a better pundit
more popular with the viewers works more hours is contracted to the bbc for a foirtnight [whilst she,s freelancing ] say it again she,s robbing them and he,s selling himself short |
By:
It doesn't matter what his Wimbledon "pedigree" is in that sense, he won enough and was one of the greatest ever players
He gets that money because he is McEnroe |
By:
you cannot be serious
By:
exactly there you have the reason why :)
By:
its got surprisingly little to do with how good he is as a commentator or anything else,
he got lucky |
By:
People see him in a suit and behaving like a pretty good guy and they are a little surprised
They think to themselves I quite like him now, and he,s really good at his job Well he might be, that was my reaction |
By:
becker is another fantastic commentator
the insight they give is quite staggering |
By:
a red herring in the debate over equality of pay. mcenroe is a controversial and entertaining listen - navratilova isn't
By:
she is duller than church
lucky to get 10% of Mac's fee |
By:
give her a pay rise an thrown in billy jean king

A man and a women should get paid the same if they do the same job, but broadcasting is not an ordinary job.
In broadcasting you are paid what you're worth to the organisation, McEnroe is worth more because he is a bigger draw/pull for Television audiences based on being the bigger named player with the more controversial opinions along with the charismatic/animated style of delivery, he is also much more in demand from rival broadcasters which in turn would increase his fee in a bidding war. He actually shares duties with ESPN at Wimbledon so is probably on 300k in total for the Two weeks. Navratilova's expertise/experience is based on Women's tennis which is generally less popular then Men's Tennis and on average, given Women's Grand Slam matches are the BO3, she'll be commentating for a shorter amount of time than McEnroe as Men's Tennis in Grand Slam's in BO5, subsequently there's more to talk about in the studio/commentator post match interview and highlights show. She has exemplary spoken English, is very astute and knowledgeable but is just not very engaging, not compared to McEnroe or Becker. This isn't about equality, he isn't paid more because he is a man. When Serena Williams retires, if she was offered a role at the BBC to cover Wimbledon, she too without a doubt would be in the same 150k to 200k bracket Mac is because she is a big draw to today's audience and that's what she'd be worth as the Greatest Female player of all time. |
By:
So what happens when you have 11 premier league players playing for the same team and they will be all on different contracts. The top players get paid more. That's the simple answer. No difference here with McEnroe being the top broadcaster.

By:
Thinly veiled "The BBC is a great institution" thread.
By:
Who gives a fu k what their opinion is - I just want to watch the game. Wouldn't pay them in buttons. Shouldn't be using the licence money in this way.

By:
How many hours did each of them put in?
By:
In fairness McEnroe is s hit , hasn't a clue what's going on outside the top 50 in tennis, cliche after cliche
By:
Stop talking sense darren!
By:
All these greedy coonts complaining about unequal pay. Why did they sign their contract in the first place if they're not happy about it?

Broadcasting should be mostly about personality. McEnroe has it, Navratilova doesn't. They are both great champions and only one of them is a good commentator. Martina gets the gig because of who what she has done, rather than what she can do. McEnroe must do far more hours than Martina because he's much better at it.
Women tennis players have been getting equal pay for years for bringing less to the table. They piggy back on the more popular mens game yet get paid the same. They play less hours too, although I don't think that's a big deal. So they have a sense of entitlement to more than they are fairly worth to begin with. I get the argument that Wimbledon is bigger with both sexes combined, and I agree. But one sex benefits out of the combination far more than the other. |
By:
^ Totally agree. Well said.
By:
Contestants on I'm A Celbrity don't get paid anywhere near the same amount as each other. Carol Vorderman got paid something like ten to twenty times what Joel Dommett did, yet he lasted longer and entertained us far more.
By:
Very well said Clyde.
The aggressive feminists do women no favours at all with their ignorant protests. I know a few women who love their tennis..mens' tennis. They have little time for the womens' game . People migrate to the best. JM's pay reflects that along with his personality. |
By:
a more fitting comparison might be how much the bbc pay henman as opposed to navratilova,as pundits theyre of the same standard both pretty poor.
By:
Doesn't he get £150,000 for talking twaddle while she only gets £15,000?
All aboard the BBC gravy train. They're both overpaid! I propose a cap on what these has-beens get paid by the BBC. There must be plenty other ex-tennis pros prepared to do the job for a third of what they give him. |
By:
not ones the viewer wants to hear, you can see, hear the ex uk pro dullards sky get on to talk about tennis, faceless no marks
By:
How do you know who the viewers want to listen to 1tp?
If they cut his salary in half, he'd still do it anyway. |
By:
McEnroe is the best commentator I've heard in any sport. Knowledgeable, gives an opinion, he's fun, engaging, had an interesting life away from tennis. Using this as some sort of outrage is embarrassing. The people doing it can't see the damage it's doing.
