A borders councillor quipped after learning that SNP transport minister Humza Yousaf had visited the are "Nobody seen him as he was hiding under his Burka".
The councillor has been suspended by his party (Labour) but Humza wants him sacked and has contacted the police to see if a hate crime has been committed.

Seems to me a million miles away from a hate crime.

Why doesn't calling someone a racist be regarded as a hate crime when it's malicious and intended to cause offense?

Transport Minister Humza Yousaf and Labour MSP Anas Sarwar have told BBC Scotland that racism and Islamophobia are getting worse in Scotland.

Appearing together on the BBC's Sunday Politics Scotland, they both said they frequently received violent death threats via social media and in emails.

The MSPs said members of the Muslim community and other faiths had reported increasing levels of abuse.

This included on the street and while engaged in work.

Some of the abuse Mr Yousaf and Mr Sarwar have encountered was highlighted recently.

Earlier this week, a Dumfries and Galloway Labour councillor who admitted making an Islamophobic comment about Mr Yousaf was suspended by his party.

Jim Dempster told transport officials at a meeting that "no-one would have seen [Mr Yousaf] under his burka".

In January, another Labour councillor was suspended following allegations of racist remarks about Mr Sarwar.

Richard Leonard, the leader of Scottish Labour, has pledged to take action to drive racism out of the party.

'Undercover mission'
Mr Yousaf said the "vile abuse" targeted at him was on a weekly and, at times more frequent, basis.

The minister, who encountered racial abuse growing up, said what shocked him now was the level of violence in the messages sent to him.

He said: "People will constantly refer to taking a bullet to me.

"I think 99% of them are probably mouth and no trousers, but that being said if the 1% take up that threat it is very, very serious indeed."

Mr Yousaf added: "What is worrying is that young people are seeing this face to face now.

"We are are hearing more Islamophobic and racist remarks right to our faces, and people are feeling emboldened post-Brexit and because of other factors too."

Mr Sarwar said he had received threats on social media, in emails and in message left on his office phone. They included threats to burn down his offices.

Other abuse included questions about his loyalties to Scotland and the UK and that he was part of an "undercover mission to impose Sharia law".

He said that while he and Mr Yousaf were "blessed in a way" of having a platform to highlight and challenge the abuse, the majority of people who were targeted in the same way were too frightened to their experiences in public.

Mr Sarwar said: "In wider society, it is the 'dinosaurs' who will say stupid things and crass, offensive things, but we shouldn't pretend it will be phased out with age and time."

He said not just Muslims, but people of other faiths, including Sikhs, were encountering the same types of abuse.

Mr Yousaf added that unlike previous generations who felt they had suffer their abuse in silence, people today were prepared to bring it out in the open in an effort to tackle it.

Vile abuse really, Rotherham,Telford and many other towns across the country is where the real vile abuse is happening and it is extreme rascism.

Scottish Labour is investigating further allegations of racist behaviour against a councillor.

Jim Dempster was suspended by the party last week after admitting making an Islamaphobic remark about Transport Minister Humza Yousaf.

Mr Yousaf has now passed on allegations from two other people who have accused Mr Dempster of "disturbing racial abuse" towards them.

Mr Dempster said the allegations were totally untrue and had no substance.

His accusers wish to remain anonymous, but the allegations they have made cover the late 1980s and early 1990s when both were children and Mr Dempster owned a shop in the village of Sanquhar.

One of them told BBC Scotland that Mr Dempster would pick on him whenever he went into the shop, and regularly called him names.

Islamophobic comment row rekindled
Councillor suspended over burka slur
The other accuser made a number of claims including that Mr Dempster "chased me around his shop with an air freshener saying I smelled of curry".

Mr Yousaf said the claims were "extremely concerning", and repeated his call for Mr Dempster to be expelled from Labour and to stand down as a Dumfries and Galloway councillor.

He added: "I would urge all victims of hatred to come forward and have their voices heard and their stories told."

It emerged last week that Mr Dempster told transport officials at a meeting that "no-one would have seen [Mr Yousaf] under his burka".

The councillor later apologised to Mr Yousaf, saying he was ashamed and embarrassed and could offer no defence or explanation.

He also insisted that the "stupid and ill-judged remark is not representative of who I am".

On Tuesday, Mr Dempster had issued a joint statement with the imam of the Dumfries Islamic Centre in which he was described as a "good man".

Meanwhile the Christian charity Open Doors found the global level of Christian persecution has risen for the fourth year in a row, with Asian countries showing a particularly rapid rise.

The study found Islamic extremism was responsible for increased hostility in 14 of the top 20 counties on its list.

The reality is far removed from the rhetoric that white people or atheists or Christians are the most racist ethnic or religious sect, actually they are the least.

More phoney hate crimes in Scotland,

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-43544155

MSPs are to consider further action to tackle an "abhorrent" letter and social media campaign encouraging people to "punish a Muslim".

Counter-terrorism police have been investigating letters sent out around the UK as a possible hate crime.

Images of the A4 notes, which contain a list of violent acts alongside a number of "points" for performing them, have been widely shared online.

There are fears the campaign may have led to physical attacks in Scotland.

Holyrood's cross-party group on tackling Islamophobia is to discuss the "Punish a Muslim day" letters with Police Scotland representatives on Tuesday.

Concerns have also been raised about them in the House of Commons, with MPs describing the "abhorrent" letters as a "really urgent situation".

No-one in Scotland is known to have received a copy, but Labour MSP Anas Sarwar said there has been a "spike" in racist and Islamophobic crimes in Glasgow.

'Be more vigilant'
He told BBC Radio Scotland's Good Morning Scotland programme that he knew of five "very serious" hate crimes in the city over the last 10 days.

In one case, he said a schoolgirl was asked if someone could rip off her hijab so they could film it and earn 25 points from the "Punish a Muslim" campaign.

Mr Sarwar said a woman was also assaulted outside a supermarket, where she was sworn at and told to go home.

Another woman was attacked in a shopping centre and a third was abused and assaulted on train by three men.

"So all of these things - added to this Punish a Muslim campaign running on social media - is causing genuine fear and alarm," the MSP added.

Mr Sarwar said he had been contacted by people unsure as to how to keep themselves safe.

"What we're trying to do is find a coordinated response, saying please go about your daily business as you normally would," he said.

"Let's not let these people change our everyday way of life, but be more vigilant, look out for your friends and family, and if you see anything, suspect anything or experience anything, please share that with the police."

Earlier, Mr Sarwar said MSPs would be discussing the issue with police at the cross-party group meeting, where they will identify additional action to reassure people.

"We have a duty to stand against racism and prejudice in all its forms. MSPs will come together to show support and solidarity with the communities being targeted by this vile Islamophobic campaign," he added.

Dr Muhammad Adrees, convener of the Muslim Council of Scotland, said the letters were "a chilling reminder of the very real danger and hatred facing ordinary Muslims every day".

He said: "Although there are no known recipients in Scotland, they have nonetheless caused considerable alarm and the community needs reassurance, especially since the letters have already triggered Islamophobic incidents here.

"Our advice to members of the public is to remain vigilant and alert but not alarmed. Go about your everyday business, taking some extra precautions. If you feel threatened or are at risk, contact the police immediately."

'Proportionate and measured'
Supt David Pettigrew, of Police Scotland, said: "Police Scotland is aware of the recent media coverage of letters received by some individuals in England over the past few weeks that are anti-Islamic in nature.

"While there are no known recipients in Scotland to date, Police Scotland recognise that there is the potential for a rise in fears amongst some community members and also for some incidents of hate to be perceived to have been caused by the publicity around the letters.

"Police Scotland officers are liaising with relevant forces and continues to monitor the situation.

"Regular reviews are being conducted and any action taken will be proportionate and measured, whilst being careful not to inadvertently raise any additional fears or concerns."

Mr Sarwar has also been selected to raise the matter with Nicola Sturgeon at her weekly question session at Holyrood on Thursday.

There's sort of an implied excuse for extremism and terrorism.  Take away any questioning of, or jokes about our religion, and there won't be so many extremist suicide murderers.  There's no threat of Christians turning into mass murderers if their religion is lampooned or questioned.  It's a moral and practical dilemma.

Here is some REAL racism from Scotland no anonymous accusers this time,Good to see Mr Abdalla's behaviour is improving now he has his council house.

A SOMALI man branded a police officer a "white b****" and another a "n***** b****" during a boozy outburst.

Sakariye Abdalla, 40, came to the attention of cops who were on mobile patrol along the city's Victoria Road one evening.

When approached for shouting whilst under the influence, the accused told police to "f*** off" and called them "b*******".

He then began to kick and jump on shop shutters and refused to desist.

When transported to Cathcart Police Station, Abdalla racially abused the officers and spat towards a constable. The police applied spit hoods and then dealt with the accused.

At Glasgow Sheriff Court, Abdalla pleaded guilty to acting in an aggressive manner, shouting, swearing and kicking the front metal shutters of a shop in Victoria Road on January 9, 2018. He also admitted uttering racial remarks and attempting to spit on a constable at Cathcart Police Station following his arrest.

Abdalla's lawyer claimed he was regretful of his actions. The defence agent explained that the accused, who is originally from Somalia, had been in the hostel system for a number of years which led to the rise of a criminal record and issues with alcohol and drugs.

Abdalla now has his own tenancy and his quality of life was said to be improving. Although this offence was committed while the accused had his own home, his lawyer noted: "He seems to be slowly but surely getting back on an even keel."

Sheriff Alayne Swanson sentenced the accused, of Aberfeldy Street, to a Community Payback Order as a direct alternative to custody. Abdalla will be supervised for a year and will have to complete 100 hours of unpaid work within three months.
