I have been offered a tv for nothing but I am in two minds whether to get it.

I love my life the way it is at the moment.  Out first thing in the morning to have a coffee and read the papers and books then back home to do housework etc before playing poker, badly, for hours and then reading books until bedtime and then even then reading in bed.

The problem is that although I miss not having a tv sometimes, mainly for sport, I am worried that I will eat  rubbish and drink more.  When I had a tv I used to drink a bottle of wine in the evening, now I only drink half a bottle of red wine.

Any thoughts, fellow chit chatters?

You'll be obliged to get a license, I presume you don't have one?

No, I don't have a license and I don't mind getting one but worry I will become a zombie, eating chocolate and drinking wine Sad

I have just had a look at the schedules of bbc, itv etc and there is almost ntg I want to watch.  I suppose films that I haven't seen and football, racing and major sport would be what I would watch and buy box sets or netflix etc.  But again I have seen the netflix schedules and there is not much I want to watch.  I suppose I will buy box sets and watch those.  Probably end up just watching match of the day on tv!  But I do miss like this weekend  when they will be showing the fa cup quarter finals live.

I do have a tv mainly for watching/betting on sports. But all the sport, and more, you can find on tv is on the web - it may be delayed by 30 seconds but it's there (no much good for betting though). Films, box sets, etc all there. You'll need virus protection/ad blockers and common sense but nothing outrageous. I'm not talking firesticks or anything just normal web.

If you can you could also open an account with B365 as they cover a lot of live football and other sports for no cost (no need to bet). Usually as fast as anything but admittedly a small screen.

Yes, why did you say that conditor?

If you are inferring I am lying - then about what?

If you have avoided tv for so long you should stay that way, just get netflix on your pc or laptop.

If you can find a friend who has Sky Sports and/or BT that they don't use online then use their one. I had a Sky operator once tell me to use my Dad's if he wasn't using it.

BBC/ITV et al are all online (licence required for Beeb)

There are 1000's of films on youtube and Amazon provide many latest films too (for a fee)

The list is endless, hence why I don't possess or want a TV myself; I literally have all I need on my PC however, as Charlie pointed out, betting in-running is a little tricky

Is there a way of buying box sets that you stream without being a member of netflix or amazon prime etc so I  can choose the ones I want.  I really don't want the hassle of dvd box sets.

Annie, I think conditor's post was referring to me not you!

What box set would you like?

Amazon annie... I have many films and box sets I've bought that are held on Amazon when I want them

Charlie, I really loved breaking bad, game of thrones, walking dead etc, so stuff like that.  Although I have noticed watching game of thrones etc that by the time you see the next series you have forgotten how it ended and have to watch the previous season's last episodes again.  I might just watch those series that have definitely ended.

How does that work, Aspro?  So you don't get the discs?  I think it is a bit of a faff putting discs in, although I have never done it - others did it.

Thanks annie; you just buy the streaming version and it goes into your Amazon library to watch whenever you want. A little more expensive than DVD's though. I usually pay in the region of £4.99/£5.99 for films but more for box sets. You don't need Prime, they are yours forever; just click and play. I have the entire Only Fools & Horses on there as well as countless films

If you're sharp you'll occasionally see a bargain film for £0.99 or £1.99; I look out for those and stock up when they arrive. Failing that, most films are available for rent at circa £2.49 (SD) or £3.49 (HD) for 48 hours. Again, just click and watch. Simples
