it is strange thoughI am a lefty but I don't recognise much of the 'socialist' about most of the many 'progressives' with the strange 'I hate my country' part of it can be laid at the foot of the eu project which is trying to destroy any idea of nations.Remember many of them were born into or have grown up under the umbrella of the eu.An irony about this is the Eu itself has attempted to expand eastwards and caused a localised war with russia.Talk about a warlike attitude.
Slightly off topic, but I agree. You leftish credential come from witnessing class discrimination and wanting to address it, and you would have at the same time had a feeling of care and support to your home country. That is just being patriotic and nothing wrong with that.
There have been two changes since. Firstly, the rise of identity politics which seemed to have been taken on by leftish intellectuals from sometime in the 1960s but I only started experiencing in the 1980s - maybe I was too young beforehand to appreciate it. That coupled with the EU agenda over the course of the last 30 years in dismantling borders in people's perceptions. This is a generalisation but your average socialist in the modern era would tend to be less nationalistic than your average capitalist.
Hope I have explained myself. I am not an intellectual!!! Wouldn't be in the second wave of executions come the revolution.
