Five people were killed when a helicopter crashed into the East River of New York City on Sunday evening, police say.

Divers worked desperately to pull the five passengers from the helicopter but two of them died at the scene while the other three died in hospital.

The pilot managed to free himself and was rescued by a passing tugboat.

The helicopter, which had been chartered for a photo shoot, crashed near Roosevelt Island.

Police commissioner James O'Neill told reporters it had been privately leased by a group of photographers.

How awful that they couldn't undo their safety harnesses and try to escape. It seems they had to be cut free by divers.

How terrifying for them.

Doors were off Heli for a photo shoot trip ,hence they were all in special harnesses ,heli ditched and rolled  over when something happened to one auto float or it pitched after blades contacted water after giving out a mayday and going down   ,they needed to use the knifes which were attached to the harnesses but proved too difficult a task for them  upside  down in cold water ,just a once off photo shoot trip I think and people falling out the main risk ,safety gear got them ,sad stuff .
