A man who is critically ill after being exposed to an unknown substance in Wiltshire is a Russian national convicted of spying for Britain, the BBC understands.

Sergei Skripal, who is 66, was granted refuge in the UK following a "spy swap" between the US and Russia in 2010.
He and a woman in her 30s were found unconscious on a bench at a shopping centre in Salisbury on Sunday afternoon.
The substance has not been identified.

Police are investigating whether a crime has been committed, following the incident at the Maltings shopping centre.
Col Skripal, who is a retired Russian military intelligence officer, was jailed for 13 years in 2006 for spying for Britain.

He was convicted of passing the identities of Russian intelligence agents working undercover in Europe to the UK's Secret Intelligence Service, MI6.

Russia said Col Skripal had been paid $100,000 for the information, which he had been supplying from the 1990s.
He was one of four prisoners released by Moscow in exchange for 10 US spies in 2010, as part of a swap. Col Skripal was later flown to the UK.

He and a woman, aged in her 30s, are both in intensive care at Salisbury District Hospital.

BBC 2 now :

The woman found slumped on a shopping centre bench alongside a former Russian agent convicted of spying for Britain is his daughter, it has emerged.

Yulia Skripal, in her 30s, and father Sergei, 66, are critically ill in hospital after being found unconscious in Salisbury, Wiltshire, on Sunday.
UK police are trying to find out what "unknown substance" harmed the pair.

A number of emergency services workers were assessed immediately after the incident - and one remains in hospital.
Russia insisted it had "no information" on what could have led to the incident, but said it was open to co-operate in the police investigation if requested.

Putin, power and poison: Russia’s elite FSB spy club
Former agent Mr Skripal, whose wife, son and older brother have all died in the past two years, was granted refuge in the UK following a "spy swap" in 2010.

Dmitry Peskov, Russian President Vladimir Putin's spokesman, told journalists that Moscow was prepared to help with the investigation.
"We see this tragic situation but we don't have information on what could have led to this, what he was engaged in," he said.

Police are currently examining CCTV footage, filmed by a Salisbury gym, showing an unidentified man and woman walking near to the location where Mr Skripal and his daughter were found.

Boris Johnson suggested that, if Russia were found to be involved in the Skripal case, England would boycott the World Cup. In those circumstances, he said: “I think it will be difficult to see how UK representation at the World Cup can go ahead.”

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy ...... inside Job by  british or ruski field agents
Report tictacman1 • March 7, 2018 11:32 PM GMT
Reports in Russia suggested that Mr Skripal was originally recruited by MI6 in Tallinn, Estonia, and may have lectured on the KGB tactics since moving to Britain.

During his years working for MI6, the balding spy unmasked dozens of agents threatening Western interests.

Col Skripal was so well-connected that even after his retirement from his spy service in 1999 he continued to pass exceptional secrets to London by staying in touch with his former colleagues as a reservist officer.

After Col Skripal's conviction, one official said: 'His activities caused a significant blow to Russia's external security.'

Chief military prosecutor Sergei Fridinsky said: 'It is impossible to measure in roubles or anything else the amount of harm caused by Skripal.'

State-run TV in Russia even compared him to the legendary Soviet double agent Oleg Penkovsky, who spied for Britain and the US during the height of the Cold War.
Report CLYDEBANK29 • March 8, 2018 10:05 AM GMT
This guy was in prison for several years in Russia.  If they'd wanted to bump him off they could have done it in Russia no problem with no consequences.  So if they did bump him off it would seem likely it was something he was doing after the spy swap.
Report Injera • March 8, 2018 10:37 AM GMT
The self righteous indignation from our politicians and media is nauseating.

How many civilians have we killed in Libya, Afghanistan and Iraq in recent times? Maybe those deaths don't count.. How many agents have we bumped off around the world? Or are weallowed to because we're the 'good guys'.
Report jed.davison • March 8, 2018 10:53 AM GMT
It doesn't concern you that a hostile foreign power may be using nerve agents to kill whomsoever it pleases on British soil?
Report Injera • March 8, 2018 11:04 AM GMT
Not really no. People are being killed on our streets every week.

The Russians have probably targeted this spy just like we do the same to our rogue spies abroad. It's awful but this stuff happens.

I'm more concerned at our hideous foreign policy that has/is killing hundreds of thousands.

dave - is it any surprise that our Home Office and Border Agency fail to keep people safe? Where's the criticism of them??

We import criminals all the time and we have home grown jihadists blowing us up. Now we have a Russian agent (probably) trying to kill another Russian agent on UK soil. Forgive me if I'm not outraged nor surprised. Anyone can seemingly enter our country.

We have a wealth of recent experience of attacking sovereign states and removing their leaders, whilst decimating their people. The OTT coverage of this story whilst ignoring our war mongering troubles me.
