Google best car for £3000
Then use Google's tools button to restrict country to UK and time to the last year.

This should throw up some good results because this sort of article is an old stand-by for the motoring press: best cars below X.

Have a look at which motor the local mini cabs are using. Round my way they're all in Skoda's so I figure they're reliable and cheap to maintain.

Impossible to recommend, without knowing the basic requirements, ie size, two, three, four or five doors.

Also potential insurance and road tax amounts.

Invest in the magazine "What Car", as it gives incredibly detailed info, on all aspects and with cars categorised by type, size,
and others.

A VW Polo would be a good start, or a Fiesta, Auris, Corsa etc.

Unfortunately, if it's a dealer, you will either be looking at an on street site, or selling from home, and plus some of these don't say they are traders.

Try to buy privately but don't look at just the car!
Look at the people who are selling it. If they have a nice house, and a tidy garden, and are of senior years you will be pretty safe.

Also, if they can present you with all the service history, and have had the car for a good few years, even better!

When we returned to the UK after living abroad for some years we had a £2000 budget for a motor. I scoured the Internet for advice and information and the clearest message I took from it all was, for that kind of money the first rule is buy Japanese.

I found a Nissan Almera with low mileage, full service history and one previous owner. It's not the best looking in the world but it's a cracking little car and so far (3 years later) so good.

Have a look at some local auctions, you're bound to get something decent like a Golf for £3K.I had one years ago, I did about 50,000 miles per year on average for 4 years and it never went wrong once.
