Russia has developed a new array of nuclear weapons that are invincible, according to President Vladimir Putin.
Mr Putin made the claims as he laid out his key policies for a fourth presidential term, ahead of an election he is expected to win in 17 days' time.

The weapons he boasted of included a cruise missile that he said could "reach anywhere in the world".
He said of the West: "They need to take account of a new reality and understand ... [this]... is not a bluff."

Giving his annual state of the nation speech, Mr Putin used video presentations to showcase the development of two new nuclear delivery systems that he said could evade detection.

One included a "low-flying, difficult-to-spot cruise missile... with a practically unlimited range and an unpredictable flight path, which can bypass lines of interception and is invincible in the face of all existing and future systems of both missile defence and air defence".

Another weapon he discussed was a submarine-launched, long-range missile capable of delivering a nuclear warhead.

Seems to me this is the stupidest idea ever.  If it looks like one of these things has been launched, his country gets completely scorched.  Time to send all the oligarchs back home.

All he needs now is a way to survive a nuclear winter

I agree with Dave, developing delivery systems to circumvent the "early warning system" invalidates "MAD" and invites a pre-emptive attack.

This is just such bad news. As pointed out above a key way MAD works is you don't get too nervous about a first strike wiping you out before you can do anything.
If someone has what might be a very fast first strike weapon with very little time to think or respond, that's when people it is aimed at get extra nervous and accidents can happen. After the hawaii missile alert fiasco of a few months ago my confidence level wasn't increased...

Still, global thermonuclear war might clean the snow off the driveways.

The idea is to produce defences for your country, that means creating technology that stops missiles from hitting your own country

Maybe someone should tell the snowflakes on twitter than in the event of total nuclear armageddon, transgender non white people may be harmed.

They'll be on putin's case in before you can say "Borscht"!

This is not aimed at the West imo but at the East -- where Russia has a 2,500 mile border with China whose military budget dwarfs Russia's.

And at Putin's own electorate because he wants to win by a huge margin (and locking up the opposition helps too). Russia's problem is it has to spend over 5 per cent of GDP on its armed forces which is way more as a percentage than China and America, so that is money that can't be spent making Russians' lives better, but a lot less in cash terms: a third of Chinese and just a tenth of America's spending on things that go bang.
