TV adverts have the annoying habit of playing songs that are covers of the originals but in a word cr@p ie the annoying TUI advert with a totally bolloxs version of Chaka Khan's Ain't Nobody but sometimes a cover version matches or exceeds the original. Three that come to mind and I like are Great White's cover of Rock n Roll - more Led Zeppelin than Led Zeppelin - Scorpions cover of The Who's I Can Explain and Rage's pumped up disco version of Bryan Adams Run To You Happy

Stevie Wonder had a good crack at The Beatles 'We Can Work it Out'.
Likes a cover does Stevie, done loads of good uns.

Elvis's epic 'Always On My Mind' is seen as the standard, but it was a Willie Nelson hit first. Must be a good track for covering as The Pet Shop Boys also did a nice version.
Elvis, of course, was a serial coverer, particularly later in his career, in his Vegas live shows. His live 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' from this era is a spine tingler.

I can't say I am really a fan of either of these bands, but Guns and Roses did a very good cover of the UK Subs 'Down On The Farm'

The Clash did loads of decent covers after they ran out of ideas after the first two albums. However, Jimi doing 'All along the Watchtower' is the best, because he lifts an already great song to another level.

Whilst it is unfashionable to approve of U2, their version of 'Helter Skelter' deserves a mention, v good imo.

A cover song is just somebody leaching off  somebody else imo. The original, like it or not, cannot be bettered. It is what it is and stands by it's very being. Having said that, were it not for those totally bereft of the ability to write we wouldn't have pop-music.
