Just been Googling some of the prostrate health websites, and yes it seems the question is certainly serious enough for (e.g.) Prostrate Cancer UK to have a lot of material about it at their website, and even made available a publication on the subject.

I mean: Would you really would have raised Steve V's question on Chit Chat if he hadn't? And before Googling it (and assuming you were genuinely only interested in getting a straight *ahem* answer to the question)?

That would make you as idiotic as him.
Utterly ridiculous from OP and frankly says a lot about his character.
The internet's main function these days seems to be to demonstrate very effectively that half the population are below average intelligence.

In answer to the original question, I would doubt it more likely his age. Nothing more nothing less. Liked him in Blackadder goes fourt but not a big fan however on a human note I wish him well and hope he has a full recovery.

dave1357 I have a relative who has a type of Lymphoma luckily for him it's turned out to be a slow developing disease. He worked for many years in a plastics factory is he below average intelligence for wondering whether that was the cause of his illness? No Unless bum banditry DEFINITELY has no negative effects on the prostate and can't cause cancer I'll plead ignorant for not knowing,it's not something that I've really thought about tbh.

Steve... you quote that... on the same basis, you've slandered portman? So...
And what about alun... he actually answered your question, yet you don't even acknowledge him?
1.16 you're still adding quote marks and plus signs into Google searches. 1.01 you shove Lego up your bum.

FFS... You've even managed to crowbar "leftist" into this thread!!!!!
Why is it considered such an insult? Does it really make you feel more, 'one of the chaps'?

Violent, narrow minded.

Steve... you answer my question and I'll ask yours?
Denzil... I don't turn to Google for opinion, but to get an answer. Do you do otherwise? Do you come to chit chat to fact check?

Violent, narrow minded. I've only EVER seen that sort of stuff on this forum. My personal experience of violent political types, although some years ago, have been very much "feral" Rightists. Leftists isn't actually an insult, it's just used as one here - mostly by Mail reader "types".
Yes crowbar. There was nothing remotely political - yet as on nearly every thread on here - one of the regulars tries to create false indignation and then attribute it to 'lefties'
It's the standard M.O.

It varies, xmoney. It's quite common and more common with age. But some people survive it for years.
What's made it harder to spot is a lack of Prostate examinations by GPs, who tend to prefer an inaccurate blood test. Which measures PSA Antigens.
It's not like anyone enjoys the examination, but it would be quicker and cheaper if they'd just do it.

What is strange is that blokes of our age (60'ish) are responding to this fruitcake's ill informed thread when they could be watching Old Grey Whistle Test live. Wonders never cease.

Cancer is such an horrendous disease, it strikes indiscriminately and brings dreadful fear and misery in its wake. The affect on sufferers' families shouldn't be underestimated either.
Best wishes to Stephen Fry. Cancer is such an horrendous disease, it strikes indiscriminately and brings dreadful fear and misery in its wake. The affect on sufferers' families shouldn't be underestimated either.
A friend from schooldays died of it two years ago, another friend has recently had his prostate removed to prevent cancer spreading and I've had invasive tests, thankfully clear so far, so it's not negligible by far. When I recall the anxiety while awaiting the biopsy results I can sympathise with Mr Fry in getting bad news. We all, with the exception of the two ladies on here, run this particular gauntlet.

As I said blackbarn I have no idea about prostate and gays. I made a general comment based on this:
Gay and bisexual men should have a check-up at least every six months at a sexual health or genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinic. This is important, as with some STIs there are no symptoms.

Foinavon - I am in the same boat - Two friends dead, one diagnosed, couple of others waiting for test results.
Hard to take when you get fruitcakes like Injera posting like it is a lifestyle choice.

Foinavon - been there. It's a lonely place waiting a few weeks for the results of biopsies - dark days. The relief when it comes is overwhelming. I am presuming that Stephen Fry's biopsies where positive for cancer. That's bad enough but the big problem is, has it spread. I wish him well.

Very well educated man and a great lecturer/debater on a whole host of subjects. Must be horrible news to get and difficult to deal with. I also wish him well.

Some of these prostate cancers are so slow growing that many outlive the cancers through natural causes, think I read somewhere that when autopsys have been done a large % of men are found to have prostate cancers they were tiotally unaware of..

My lovely neighbour, she has lived two doors down from me for 30 years. She has just been diagnosed with bowel cancer, she is 51. A teacher, a lovely family with her two young sons and great husband and I've never known her to drink apart from a glass of cheer on special occasions and she is in a very bad place right now, just so absolutely heartbreaking.

Denzil... thanks for clarifying. If remedying boredom is more important than giving advice about how to avoid, or deal with, cancer, I'm much obliged for getting me up to speed on current Chit Chat protocol.

Pleased you had a good result too, crystalhunt, the feeling of relief is amazing when you have been dreading the worst. The trouble is no test is definitive and we keep on being monitored every six months although we have cause to be optimistic until shown otherwise.
I didn't think Injera was implying that it's the result of a lifestyle choice, Blackbarn, gays do what they do, it's none of my business. Anyone can get prostate cancer, and indeed if you live long enough and don't have your prostate removed, the chances eventually exceed 80%. When they detect a cancer, it is given a grade and below a certain level they will just monitor it using psa tests, otherwise they will recommend the prostate be removed.

Correct Foinavon - another prostate issue is benign enlargement which has the same symptoms as prostate cancer ie; frequent urination , hesitation, slow flow rate and failure to empty the bladder. If you have these symptoms get it seen to - result will probably be benign enlargement of the prostate or sometimes, as in my case, tightening of the bladder neck. There is medication for these problems allowing you to piss better and get some sleep. Once my medication stopped working I had an op called a bladder neck incision - I'm now putting fires out.

Blood test for PSA count is an essential annual trip to the Drs.for men over 40.
Prostate Cancer kills more men than Breast Cancer in women. Breast Cancer gets significant advertising and promotion. The same should happen for this dreadful male disease.
For those on this thread that have debased themselves by homophobic statements, you should be thoroughly ashamed.

In Aug 2014 I asked my doctor for a test for prostate being 50+ Result no prostate cancer, however from that test within two weeks I was diagnosed with Bone Marrow cancer, no cure other than going on the list for a BM transplant, chances of a match slim, just got to get on with it what else can you do.

Ta guys, no its been a tough few years, not expecting to find a donor, on a new drug which could help slow the process down, early trials were good & seem to help at the mo, however I was also diagnosed with testicular cancer in March 2016 & though that was initially sucessful after surgery on my yearly scan last March they found a growth on my adrenal gland which required chemo last autumn, that finished in Oct feeling better now but my immune system is shot to pieces & had cold/cough since mid Dec except for a week end Jan before getting another one, hoping the spring/summer brings some better health.

Some great advice from crystalhunt. All the best to you pumphol and Foinavon.
Just a short sample on here shows how widespread and deadly cancers are. A number of Sky pundits are doing wonders highlighting prostate cancer.
I lost a friend to cancer 2 weeks before Christmas. Mother of 2 young kids. Dead before her 40th.

I get the feeling that people have accepted cancer as simply another health hazard that cannot be avoided. So add it to the list of heart disease, high blood pressure, arthritis and now the latest mass affliction - diabetes.
We're designed to live until we're 85, but most people get one of these complaints around 25 years early. And if you don't need some kind of medication by the time you're 70 you're doing well.
So what's going wrong?

By the way, modern medicine hasn't fond a cure for any of the above. They simply treat the symptoms of the complaint with drugs until we die.
Makes you think they're not looking for the reasons why people are getting sick, or looking for any cures to them either.
