Craig Charles is standing in for Steve Wright for this afternoon and it's the first time I can remember I haven't been forced to switch to BBC6 Music. Less chat, less inane drivel, no self congratulatory messages read out, better music. Obviously not as good as Marc Riley and Stuart Maconie but a vast improvement nevertheless.
Pause Switch to Standard View Can we get rid of Steve Wright for good?

I have no idea what you you are talking about.

I thought this thread was going to be about calling for the re-instatement of capital punishment.
Report Ibrahima Sonko February 23, 2018 5:01 PM GMT
He used to be great in the 90's, but now his show is just reading shout outs and rubbish instantly forgettable facts Crazy
Report i_agree_with_nick February 23, 2018 5:11 PM GMT
I had no idea he was still going. I can recall listening to him on Radio 1 circa 1986.
Report Injera February 23, 2018 5:16 PM GMT
I've recently switched from Radio 5 to 2. Radio 5 has been driving me to insanity for years. (It may be too late..)

Anyway was listening to Chris Evans this morning and he had Anne Marie in the studio playing a couple of songs.

Flippin eck, what a voice.
Report saddo February 23, 2018 5:27 PM GMT
radio 5 must be losing listeners at a pace, dreadful stuff.
Report Mr Spock February 23, 2018 6:16 PM GMT
Talks through the beginning and ending of every song, calls his own show 'The big show', has 2 annoying sidekicks, interrupts the 'non stop oldies' etc etc
Report terry mccann February 23, 2018 6:45 PM GMT

Radcliffe and Maconie on BBC 6 Music is the most entertaining show on the radiogram but I think you may have to be a bit northern to fully get some of the humour. I've discovered some brilliant new music in the last 2 or 3 years thanks to this station.

Steve Wright and Jeremy Vine are both carp and ready for the home for old djs.
Report Mikael D'Haguenet February 23, 2018 6:57 PM GMT
Radio 2 is sh1te. Radio 6 alone worth the licence fee.
Report pixie February 23, 2018 6:59 PM GMT
I don't know how Jeremy Vine ever became a DJ. Who ever thought the general public would enjoy listening to his nasal whine and thought, 'what job is that voice least suited to, I know, a radio DJ, so lets put him on the radio!'

However, as Mr Spock says, Steve Wright really is the pits and why has nobody ever told him that people really don't want to hear his drivel through the beginning and end of every song.
Report pixie February 23, 2018 7:00 PM GMT
BTW I'm Southern and I fully get the humour, you don't have to be a Manc or from Wigan to get it.
Report Alices February 23, 2018 9:46 PM GMT
Jeremy Vine isn't a DJ, he is a current affairs and news presenter whom I think is very good, Steve Wright  is a patron isingi, pompous idiot, as for Radio 5, tony Livesey is excellent and interacts well with Anna Foster, Campbell  and Burden are ok too .
Report i_agree_with_nick February 23, 2018 10:22 PM GMT
Talks through the beginning and ending of every song

They do that to discourage listeners from taping the songs
Report northanlite February 23, 2018 10:28 PM GMT
i only turn radio 2 on at about 10:25 for pop master then turn off again at about 10:45.
i got 18 & 21 today. a bit disappointed but i've had worse

Report STUDYFORM February 23, 2018 10:40 PM GMT
I do exactly the same northanlite.
Radio on at 10 til 11 (only really listening to popmaster.
3 in 10 was easy today too!
At 11 it's Radio 4extra til 5. So I don't have to listen to anything twice.
Brilliant if it's quiet at work and It's perfect timing before stuff starts getting repeated.

This began out of a massive dislike for Steve Wright and his obsequious, sycophantic creeping.
Oh, and his lack of saying who the record was by. Oh, and talking/singing over the records.

Mind you, even worse is when Fearne Cotton does popmaster and takes Ken Bruce's place.
How did she EVER get a job in broadcasting?
Report STUDYFORM February 23, 2018 10:41 PM GMT
Oh and radio 5 live on Saturdays. Danny Baker is good then it's sport.
Other than that Radio 5 is unbearable PC Crap.
Report northanlite February 23, 2018 10:53 PM GMT
well i agree about Danny Baker. A lot of people seem to loath him but i love the whimsy.
radio 5 has gone downhill a bit although the breakfast show is still good imo.
Danny Baker used to do the breakfast show in the early days of radio 5 and a wonderfully eclectic show it was too.
his 606 was brilliant too & i don't really like football, it was just very funny.
Report bigH February 23, 2018 10:58 PM GMT
6 music is brilliant

As is Danny Baker on Radio 5 on Saturday mornings
Report northanlite February 23, 2018 11:01 PM GMT
3 people in a row agreeing they like Danny Baker, I'm not sure that has ever happened before Silly
Report MichaelKnight February 23, 2018 11:02 PM GMT
Used to enjoy Radio 5 breakfast show, however it now sounds more like Woman's Hour.
Report saddo February 23, 2018 11:11 PM GMT
Indeed, I think 5 got a visit from the sincerity squad, sick making smoke blowing nonsense.
Report Ibrahima Sonko February 23, 2018 11:25 PM GMT
Im also a pop master fan, i have stopped work in the 3 different regions i have worked in at 1029 Cool

So much fun created from popmaster its the best comp around.

I am having to get into this radio 6 i keep reading about.

I work outside maintaining your electricity supply so i have the radio on all day. the routine is a little bit of Venessa then Chris Evans who is very good at his job, then pop master, 11 its kisstory for 1 hour, they do old skool music for 30 mins, back for JV winding people up then the afternoons are poor, maybe some archers if i time it right. Then very little radio if the bbc 4 radio does not have an agenda.
Report bankit February 24, 2018 12:52 AM GMT
Been listening to radio 2 at work every day mon-fri from about 2000, back then Steve wright was one of the djs I looked forward too most, now he really irritates me, and the 2 clowns with there anecdotes are so boring. He's well past his shelf life and it's time to go I'm afraid.... radio heaven for me would be ken Bruce from 8am to 4.30pm, Chris Evans should listen to his show and mabye find out what humour is!!!

Can I put in a good word for Mark and Lard's former Radio 1 afternoon show, not least of the presence of FAT HARRY WHITE.

An absolute saint has put a TWO HOUR compilation of Fat Harry White monologues on YouTube for us to enjoy at

Radcliffe & Maconie is better than Mark & Lard, but both are/were great. Common denominator being Mark Radcliffe, of course. Best DJ ever! (That'll displease some John Peel fans, no doubt.) I don't get to listen to Marc Riley's show that often but he seems a lot less fun than in his Lard days. I was listening when he announced the death of his former bandleader Mark E Smith though. Handled it very well.
Report Mikael D'Haguenet February 24, 2018 2:40 AM GMT
Oh, and even though I rarely listen these days, I think Danny Baker is excellent. Does he still have that annoying Lynsey Wotsit on though?

Substitute the op's Steve Wright for Chris Evans and where do i sign. The worst way to start the day is to turn on radio 2 at 6.30am.

you just need to know the  stations and programmes to listen to
Report terry mccann February 25, 2018 4:51 PM GMT
wish youd tell me then big H, to me all these new woman singers all sound the same, and the songs sound the same,or is it me getting older??
Report asparagus February 26, 2018 12:30 PM GMT
As Big H said, that's because you are listening to the wrong stations. 6 music is infinitely better than any other station and as was said earlier on the thread, it's worth the licence fee alone. Don't get to listen to Mark Radcliffe and Stuart Maconie much as that's when the racing is on but many great shows from Lauren Laverne, Mary Anne Hobbs, Huey Morgan, Guy Garvey etc etc.
Report ericster February 26, 2018 1:03 PM GMT
If only there was a station that played music without all the carp thrown in. Today's DJs are all so "up themselves". Who needs it?
Report terry mccann February 26, 2018 1:08 PM GMT
