Bought a new phone which is described as factory unlocked....

Didn't know that the seller is in Malaysia as I wouldn't have bought it!

Tried to register it only to find that it is locked.

Dealing with them is useless as very slow to respond but the final message is they will exchange it...

Fine, but there is the not so small issue of return postage, and the concern that I could be left with no phone and no money,

Is there a way to find what network it's locked to, because without that knowledge I don't think it can be done......

Get your phone unlocked on the high street
You can also pay a fee of around £10 to get your phone unlocked on the high street, either at an outlet dedicated to this service or at your local phone shop, but it is worth shopping around to get the best deal.

Some will do this with a code, like the online services, and you may feel that being ripped off is less likely in person. Others will handle the process manually, using a cable to attach it to a computer and some specialist software.

You can also buy the equipment to manually unlock your phone yourself online, although it is only worth considering if you are confident in your abilities in tinkering with technology!

Thanks Leopard,

I've trawled the net, but haven't found any advice for where the the network is unknown.

Can't you ask the seller in Malaysia which network it is on?

I sent them the IMEI numbers but that was no good as they are useless!

I put the numbers into a site, where they say they will match them to the service provider, but they don't even recognise the numbers and,
before anyone doubts that I put in the correct numbers, they are on the box and under the battery, and I C&Pd them from a scan of the box!

Don't you just love technology?

I only buy from UK to avoid hassle.

Totally agree with that but how do you go on when the site is advertised as being in Basildon but in fact is in Malaysia?

I bought 2 HTC M9s from this seller. £165 each.

advert clearly states phones are new and sealed. when they arrived they were sealed and looked new. However when i opened them and checked the phones there was pictures and videos of some chinese/japanese guy. Also text messages in one of those languages. A sim card was still in the tray too. One of the screens feels slack and there is a small chip on the casing.

I have contacted this joker who says hes Essex based but actually is in Malaysia.Hes responded with the usaul deflection tricks. I Have opened a dispute with Ebay ... NOW EBAY IF YOU ARE LISTENING.... THIS SELLER IS RIPPING GENUINE HONEST EBAYERS OFF AND YOU SEEM TO BE SITTING BCK ALLOWING THIS TOO HAPPEN. YOU MUST STOP THIS SELLER IMMEDIATELY.

EBAY IF YOU CHECK ALL THE EMAILS I HAVE SENT THIS SELLER YOU WILL SEE HOW HE IGNORES MY COMPLAINTS.

THIS SELLERS FEEDBACK KIND OF SAYS IT ALL. I TOOK A PUNT AND GOT STUNG !

EBAY should sort you out. I bought a phone last year. Took three attempts, first two sent old models, I opened cases with ebay and got it back. Both those people had Asian sounding names. Bought the third one off an English bloke in Lancashire, no problems at all.

*I put scathing feedback up before involving ebay. Dodgy traders will offer you fast money back if you remove the feedback. Refuse, you'll get it back anyway.

After seeing damning reviews I'm not happy about sending it back as might lose everything.

It may not be locked after all, as I have three bars (if that means anything) but emergency calls only!

I just don't know how to register it but, fortunately, I have family here tomorrow, so might be able to try different sims.

All this stuff does my head in, as it's so complex and a minefield, with warnings that bad things might happen if you proceed,

Reading back....Leopard I sent them the IMEI numbers and also asked them to find out which network it's locked to.

I've also found another site which do recognise the numbers, and they say there is no global something (I've lost the word)
and the phone should be active!
