Anyone else spot it?
The series is (currently) set in the late 1960s, not that long after Enoch Powell's much-discussed (and misquoted) "Rivers of Blood" speech from April 1968.
In tonight's episode we saw the young Detective Sgt Endeavour Morse go to a party held by Joan Thursday, at which the track "Can You Hear Me Knocking?" by the Rolling Stones was playing loudly.
Surely any self-respecting detective would be asking themselves just how the Shipmaning, Huntleying, Westing, McCanning hell could Joan Thursday possibly have access to a Stones track that wasn't even recorded until Spring 1970, then not released to the general public until it appeared on the 'Sticky Fingers' album in April 1971 ?
Quite frankly I would have made an arrest there and then.

Given her access to the Stones, I wonder whether Joan Thursday might next week be assisting the police with their enquiries into the mysterious death of one LEWIS BRIAN HOPKIN JONES, found dead in a swimming pool in Summer 1969?
Joan's brief will, quite rightly, rip plod a new one should they try to feel her Oxford.

Another catastrophic musical error already in tonight’s ‘Endeavour’.
This series, set in 1969, featured Prince Charles’s Investiture (1st July 1969), yet simultaneously we heard Led Zeppelin’s “What Is And What Should Never Be” (from Led Zep 2) being played, which was not actually released until October 1969.
Must do better.

I’m a bit confused here. I need to recap on the end of the last series.
Makybe, if I recall correctly at the end of the last series DC George fancy is murdered, this causes Morse to quit being a detective, Cowley is merged into Thames valley with a new DCI in charge. Think that is correct, brilliant series.

@Makybe_Diva re Fred's loan to his brother (who lost it).
Though not explicitly mentioned, that is the reason for (a) Fred having to accept being demoted because he can't afford to retire, and (b) Fred's wife acting coldly towards him (though she also blames him for driving their daughter away).

They gave him Five Years, although for once they correctly didn't play the splendid Bowie track of the same name because that didn't get released until 1972.
Don't think Morse quit being a detective by choice after Fancy's murder...thought he station was closed and they were offered lesser positions elsewhere. If I remember right Bright said he would resign but obviously didn't as he's now in charge of the County traffic police. The only one who seems to have not lost position is the fat fellow who joined the Masons.

Thanks Ramruma. With the help of this thread, it’s all come back to me now. Almost.
They were shown watching Bright in the new Pelican ad...perhaps an in joke
Bright in the Pelican public service advert is:
a) a reminder of the period;
b) a sign of Bright having been sidelined as a result of the amalgamation of forces and the closure of his nick, with our four coppers being scattered across the new Thames Valley Police;
c) by the end, we see it is relevant because of the way the girl died.

Re the scattered coppers -- right at the end, Strange has manoeuvred Morse back into the CID in the same team as Fred. We saw Strange catching the ACC(?) on the stairs to sign the form Strange has prepared and presented as a routine item.
Hang on Ramruma -are you suggesting that the girl should have used a Pelican crossing in the middle of nowhere?
I got the impression that having shown his boss, Ronnie Box, proof of his planting evidence i.e the alice band, Friday is asked whether he's in or out (supposedly heavy handed policing). You don't see his reply but I think getting Box to OK Morses return to the team is Fridays acquiescence... I'm in but only if you get Morse back.
Right at the end of the last episode, Strange asked his superior to sign a form recalling Morse back to the team which he did.
Yes, it was Strange who done it.
Fred's in-or-out with Box was his willingness to beat up the druggie nonce to get a confession -- hence the bruised knuckles when he got home. Of course, it later turned out the druggie was innocent.
So what is Strange up to? He wants to find out who murdered DC Fancy at the end of last series. He tried and failed to interest Morse a couple of times this episode. Strange is not good enough to solve it himself so he needs to get back together the two best detectives he knows -- Thursday and Morse. As @Dr Crippen said, he has now done this.
Presumably in the next week or two, Strange will try to get the case reopened and assigned to Box's team, and this will be the series-long arc. Or it might just fizzle out. We shall see.

The Moon landing was a bit dodgy as well, as Armstrong's "One Small Step" was around 4am though perhaps they were watching the news the next day. The Gerry Anderson-type puppets with the big heads were from what, 5 or 10 years earlier.
Someone on the production team clearly has the hots for 'Led Zeppelin 2'.
I'm wondering which track they'll pick for next week's episode? There must be a chance that "Ramble On' will figure one week, as lyrically it was directly inspired by Tolkien, who himself had a huge Oxford connection.
