Trump Signs Bill Revoking Obama-Era Gun Checks for People With Mental Illnesses
.
https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/trump-signs-bill-revoking-obama-era-gun-checks-people-mental-n727221
.

President Donald Trump quietly signed a bill into law Tuesday rolling back an Obama-era regulation that made it harder for people with mental illnesses to purchase a gun.

The rule, which was finalized in December, added people receiving Social Security checks for mental illnesses and people deemed unfit to handle their own financial affairs to the national background check database.

Had the rule fully taken effect, the Obama administration predicted it would have added about 75,000 names to that database.

President Barack Obama recommended the now-nullified regulation in a 2013 memo following the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, which left 20 first graders and six others dead. The measure sought to block some people with severe mental health problems from buying guns.

The original rule was hotly contested by gun rights advocates who said it infringed on Americans’ Second Amendment rights. Gun control advocates, however, praised the rule for curbing the availability of firearms to those who may not use them with the right intentions.

Why are so many mentally ill maybe a better question as knives can do as much damage ?
Report PorcupineorPineapple February 15, 2018 1:38 PM GMT
I don't think knives can do as much damage though.

The gun used yesterday was a semi-automatic AR-15. The same gun that was used in the Vegas shooting, in the nightclub shooting in Florida, as well as San Bernardino, Sandy Hook and Colorado.

Now you'd think a normal country would put two and two together and weigh up what possible legitimate reason a citizen would have for owning such a weapon and maybe decide to ban them from general sale.

Damnit, a normal country would probably look at the number of mass shootings that go on within its borders, compared to other countries and decide to do something about the proliferation of guns altogether.

But not Trump and not all the other politicians in the NRA's pocket. No, let's remove automatic checks on people with mental health problems from buying guns.

Still, as long as the victims are in their thoughts and prayers. And remember, now is not the right time to talk about gun control.

Of course, it would take decades for tighter gun controls to have a significant impact on the stats (such is the ludicrous number of guns in circulation in the US), but you have to start somewhere.

There are allegations that at least some of these mass shootings are false flags, designed to sway the American public into accepting much tighter gun control laws against their best interests. Part of the reason for the 2nd amendment right is for citizens to be able to take down a government that gets too oppressive. It really puts the power into the hands of the people.

A potentially oppressive government would indeed take the false flag path as a step towards disarming the public. Some people in America know this, that's why they're so suspicious. General gun ownership is a double edged sword though for obvious reasons.

The warning came from a person close to Cruz on an anonymous FBI tipline warning about his possession of a gun, his disturbing social media posts, and his desire to kill people, according to the FBI.

The tip-off was delivered on January 5, 2018.

The information was not sent to the FBI Miami field office, which the FBI blamed on a failure to act under “established protocols.”

“We are still investigating the facts,” FBI Director Christopher Wray said in a statement. “I am committed to getting to the bottom of what happened in this particular matter.”

Wray added that it was the FBI’s job to “act properly and quickly” when informed of troubling behavior by the public.

He expressed “regret” for the additional pain that the information would have for families and friends of those Cruz killed.

“All of the men and women of the FBI are dedicated to keeping the American people safe, and are relentlessly committed to improving all that we do and how we do it.”

But it's not true that Chicago has the toughest gun laws in the country, as other fact checkers have also repeatedly found.

[...]

Quibbling over exactly what part of the U.S. is No. 1 in terms of gun-law strictness, however, isn't the most compelling part of Sanders' statement. She also said that having gun regulations "certainly hasn't helped" in Chicago.

That's a much more controversial claim — and it doesn't stand up to scrutiny.

State lines don't stop guns

It's important to remember here that Chicago is very close to two states that have relatively weak gun laws: Wisconsin and Indiana. So while it's easy to pick on Chicago (or any other high-crime city) for its ugly statistics, says one expert, taking bordering states into account weakens this gun-advocacy talking point.

"It's not a scientific study. It's an anecdote," said Philip Cook, a professor of public policy studies at Duke University. "They might have pointed to Washington, D.C., back in the days when D.C. banned handguns and yet had high gun-violence rates. Those bans are only at best partially effective, because the borders are permeable."

D.C. borders Virginia, which does not have strong gun laws. (It gets a D from the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence.)

Neither Wisconsin nor Indiana requires licenses or permits to purchase a gun, for example, nor do they require waiting periods. While Illinois has that B+ rating from the law center, Wisconsin has a C- and Indiana a D-.

And there's good evidence that being next-door to those states keeps Chicago criminals well-supplied with guns. A 2015 study of guns in Chicago, co-authored by Cook, found that more than 60 percent of new guns used in Chicago gang-related crimes and 31.6 percent used in non-gang-related crimes between 2009 and 2013 were bought in other states. Indiana was a particularly heavy supplier, providing nearly one-third of the gang guns and nearly one-fifth of the non-gang guns.

[...]

All of this might suggest that criminals will just go to whatever lengths necessary get their hands on guns, regardless of whatever laws are in place.

But that's the wrong way to think about it, Cook said.

"No one's in a position to say that Chicago's various special regulations and Illinois's regulations are doing no good," he said, "because we don't know what the homicide rate would be in the absence of those.
