I don’t follow this nonsense other than catching parts on the news.
But isn’t it excessive for countries who don’t naturally have conditions applicable for winter Olympic sports, to recreate those conditions simply to be a ‘plucky loser’?
It’s like Nero fiddling while Rome burns.
Does this woman get a ‘three strikes and funding cut’?

Reckon they should have a mass start like they do in the cycling, with about a hundred of them on the track on the same time; noone would know what's going on, but it would be quite fun to watch.

Best watched on Eurosport; they just cover the sport. Balding and co have probably never heard of the likes of Martin Fourcade, Marit Bjoergen and Marcel Hirscher.

Danny - excuse me for changing the subject, but during the Lakeside event I did put out a call to you on the Darts Forum. We needed much more info on your historic Raffle win there.

Let's all hope that at the end of the Speed Skating comp, all the girls will come out together on the ice in those lycra trousers and perform a mass bend-over to take the cheers of the crowd.

There was a report at the start of the games about the amount of supplies they have for the athletes and it worked out around 30 condoms each, or thereabouts.

Sorry Alun, missed that. I'm afraid that a tatty 20 pound note in an envelope is the sum total of the winning raffle story. Didn't even pay for the cab home

Oh yeah. Just seen it. Will cast my mind back to the great day and respond.
What's next up on the beeb? Four hours of curling? Or perhaps some nobodies in the bobsleigh?

Christie has been disqualified from the 1000m short-track speed skating, ending her Winter Olympic hopes. After falling in both the 500m and 1500m it was hoped Elise Christie could secure a medal in the 1000m. She fell on the first start, but finished second on the restart, only to be disqualified.

£4.8m of public funding spent on short track speedskating for this OlympicsNo medals will surely mean a loss of funding. So £4.8m buys you clueless trackcraft and rank bad decision making what a waste of moneyhttps://www.statista.com/statistics/519
if she stopped wearing false eyelashes she might see where she's going.
on another note surely funding has to be withdrawn. was article on bbc breakfast yesterday about basketball and its popularity ( team sport only second to football) but it gets no funding, liz nichol ( head of funding ) said didnt get any as there was no medal possibilities !!! talk about self fulfilling prophecy. why not fund sorts for the greater good rather than meda chances ! i take it she is heaviy bonused on medals.

The whole thing has just escalated into coverage of absolute ridiculousness. joke funding, complete failure and people like balding taking it to a new level, just been looking at the bbc sport website, one comment on there by helen lewis
"anyone else taking what's happened to Elise Christie really personally? hold your head up high, we are all so proud of you"
FFS, i wonder if this anus knew who Christie actually was before this farce started, god if **** like this get's to her, i'd like to see her reaction to a family crisis.

Watched the Handball at the London Olympics, actually a great game we had a couple of decent players who played in overseas league, this was one sport crying out for funding after those games, I'm sure there would have been a decent take up of people playing it but funding was never going to happen & I doubt its hardly played here at all, millions spent in pursuit of a few medals in obscure sports I'm sure you could answer its all worth it I'm not so sure.

but its not worth is it pumphol ? only funding minority sports and lets be honest seemingly privileged sports. sailing doesn't come cheap and how many comp kids get the chance to do it ? rowing too, just elitist.cycling expensine. what happens when ther countries invest more than us in cycling ? only ever knew one rowing person and that was when i was at uni, he was called hugo and into fox-hunting too, the c unt.

Handball could have been a sport where anyone could have played even in schools but they never gave it a chance why cos medal chance were virtually nil while other more elitist sports are imo over funded but that's the way of the world sadly.

so vacuous by powers that be though to dismiss a sport as it has no medal potential, what about the greater good ? handball, basketball not exactly expensive to play and therefore low on budget in comparison to elitist sports.

exactly big h, and more kids participating in sport , govt and drs always complaining about fat kids, well here's a chance to do something about it. bollox to medals , lets have a healthier nation.

My personal favourite!
Mikael D'Haguenet 20 Feb 18 11:30 Global news according to Balding. Future of Olympics must be in doubt.

also consider the fact that Alexis Sanchez weekly wage could build 3 multisports pitches
all this at a time when grass roots football is really struggling
totally agree MMalso consider the fact that Alexis Sanchez weekly wage could build 3 multisports pitches all this at a time when grass roots football is really struggling
Basketball is the 3rd most played team sport in UK but is struggling for funding because it won't win elite medals. It's backwards. Funding isn't set up to get ordinary people participating regularly. It's thrown at madness like these idiots on ice, that only a handful of people give a sh1t about, just for propaganda purposes.

I shouldnt imagine the number of people who want to become speed skaters to be particularly large, and so as a result the extent at which she 'excels' when not failing isnt really a significant factor in how well she does in the greater concept and struggles in life. Shes existed within an artificial bubble of soviet style funding I should imagine. Now she has failed, trice. The question is to what extent do we all care enough to give her that lifestyle when the rest of us have to struggle off our own merit.

i take it team gbs flop at these olympics will result in heads rolling and rediversion of funds to more likely medal sources. bbcs build up of all the failures is embarsassing.

Funds should be rediverted to grass roots sport to give the masses the opportunity to actually get involved in sport on a regular basis. This madness of basically buying medals in niche sports in both summer and winter Olympics has to stop when sports facilities throughout the country are closing/overpriced/don't exist.

My three kids are members of our local tennis club which charges just £40 a year for each membership and £5 per child a one hour tennis lesson every Saturday. Terrific value and in the summer they probably play about 5 hours a week. So I would have to agree with the rest of you, I would much much rather see the money go to subsidising grass roots sport to inspire children to take it up permanently and right through to their adulthood.
