'Grid girls' will no longer be used by Formula 1 from the start of the 2018 World Championship season, organisers have announced.

Sean Bratches, managing director of commercial operations, said the change would be made "so as to be more in tune with our vision for this great sport".

F1 managing director of motorsports Ross Brawn told BBC Radio 5 live in December that the use of female promotional models was "under review".

The new F1 season begins on 25 March.

"While the practice of employing grid girls has been a staple of Formula 1 grands prix for decades, we feel this custom does not resonate with our brand values and clearly is at odds with modern day societal norms," Bratches added.

"We don't believe the practice is appropriate or relevant to Formula 1 and its fans, old and new, across the world."

Heard an interview with one of the F1 girls. Must admit I thought they looked like sex objects standing there like dolls whilst the men are busy with mechanics etc.

But this lass on the radio said how much she enjoyed the job, the team spirit, the team work with the F1 guys and gals, the travelling, great venues etc.
Report Ibrahima Sonko January 31, 2018 5:40 PM GMT
Must be a dream job for some people to get so close to F1 without being famous or working for one of the teams.

Wont stop here either. They are taking away peoples jobs and they are more importantly taking away peoples ability to see the world, visit other countries and take in other cultures etc. Theres a reason we live in such a bitter twisted world, people are being caged up and stopped from doing things they wanna do. This isnt about cutting costs either, your telling me they can afford to waste millions are building these machines, pay millions for the drivers to race them, but they can pay a few women a few hundred to model? Its the most stupid argument ive heard.
Report SontaranStratagem January 31, 2018 5:57 PM GMT
It might be too late aka. It can get to point of no return sadly.
Report donny osmond January 31, 2018 5:57 PM GMT
theres nothing stopping them seeing the world

or working

loads of folk losing their jobs ......
Report Injera January 31, 2018 6:01 PM GMT
Agreed donny but rare to lose your job because others (in different jobs) taking offence at what you are apparently suffering.

Bizarre doesn't begin to explain this.

I suppose they could all become brain surgeons too.
Report donny osmond January 31, 2018 6:04 PM GMT
but its not that, they are not being replaced by men, or other women

the job no longer exists

its happening all over as folk cut costs

these girls were well paid including expenses, and motor racing isnt as
attracrive as it was..

be interesting to see if they employ pretty girls to pose with winner, present prizes etc ?

and if uk bookies continue to do so ...my guess is they will, and these girls can
find other work, albeit less well paid
Report Ibrahima Sonko January 31, 2018 6:06 PM GMT

When will they remove girls from the fashion show catwalk. And/or the super model.

Or is this just a sport related tirade.
Report saddo January 31, 2018 8:18 PM GMT
They can't remove wimmin from modelling clothes, but they should be made to use some plain looking fat uns or else it aint fair.
Report lux January 31, 2018 8:30 PM GMT
So i'll guess they'll be cancelling the races in Bahrain and Abu Dhabi this year given the way women in both countries are treated?

Thought not, WALOFS...

Not bothered about this one or the darts.

Cheerleading, modelling, game show assistant, holding up the round board at boxing, presenting teddy bears to tour de france stage winners - all jobs that need to be done and best done by a nice looking lady.

Standing around looking pretty for the sake of it doesnt serve any purpose though

A beautiful girl has real power  (in evolutionary terms she is the prize) she isn't demeaned, she is elevated and her appearance adds status to any event. These hairy ars*d 3rd and 4th wavers can't grasp that simple fact as they are too busy obsessing over a different kind of power (social) which is largely within the province of men. Men and women are fundamentally different, lets celebrate those differences. ffs...

F1 bosses plan to use budding racing drivers "to make the pre-race ceremony more relevant and interesting for fans, especially the younger ones".

The sport said last week it would no longer be using female promotional models on the starting grid.

The children used will be competitors in karting or junior categories, chosen by national motorsport authorities.

A joint statement from governing body the FIA and the F1 Group said the choice would be made "on merit or by lottery".

FIA president Jean Todt said: "Formula 1 is the pinnacle of motorsport and the dream of every young racer competing the junior series that make up the FIA's single-seater pyramid, from karting all the way to F1.

"We are therefore delighted to bring that dream a little closer by giving the future champions of our sport the opportunity to stand alongside their heroes on the grid in the build-up to the race start.
