Fall front man has lost his battle with this world. Lets hope he carries on ranting in the next world.
Worlds greatest frontman of the worlds greatest band: every incarnation of them.

As John Peel once said:
"There's The Fall, and then there's everyone else"

Blimey, I'm in the middle of reading his ex-wife Brix Smith's autobiography at present.

Sad news, although in fairness it's not a huge shock.

Here's Mark in one of his part time jobs, reading the football results.

Mark's antics, and life in The Fall are also quite nicely covered in the enjoyable "The Big Midweek" book, link below

Wasn't really a Fall fan back in the day, when I got dragged along to a concert up at Oxford Poly.

Seen dozens and dozens of artists from Wembley Stadium, Glastonbury to backstreet pubs and that gig remains the greatest gig,
I've ever seen.

Bands:
The Fall
Date:
Mar 12, 1988
Venue:
Oxford Polytechnic
Location:
Oxford
Notes:
Shoulder Pads / Cab It Up / 2 x 4 / Get A Hotel / Hit The North / Frenz / Tuff Life Boogie / Pay Your Rates / Oswald Setlist:- Defence Lawyer / Carry Bag Man / Victoria / Mr Pharmacist / In These Times / Bombast / Lucifer over Lancashire / LA

Rest-ah in Peace-uhhh!

Also, coincidentally I'm reading The Big Midweek: Life Inside The Fall by long-term bassist Steve Hanley, currently

Read a bit yesterday morning, before getting up. The last lines before putting it down were:

....never knowing which one of Mark would answer the door, his greetings randomly ranging anywhere from a friendly 'Come in, c0ck!'
to a 'Fck off, you c0ck!', shouted through the letterbox.......

I'd recommend the book for an very insightful, but unbiased view of the band. Couple of quid on Amazon for Kindle version.

Prince's manager apparently said to him that him and Prince were the only artists that could 'recruit from the street' (ie replace members routinely with whoever they fancied).

His weakness may have been not valuing/appreciating the talent of others. I do think the best Fall stuff was when Hanley and Brix were both in the band (83-89 and 94-96).

I think it was a personal thing, whether you liked a particular Fall record, because so many of them were so damned peculiar. I played Hex Enduction Hour endlessly during the bitter winter of 1981-2, when I was living on my own in W Germany. It just hit the spot for me in that particular time and place. But I wouldn't go recommending anyone else rush out and listen to it.

I'm always concerned by something Paul Morley wrote, when he was reviewing some of Mark E Smith's lyrics: he'd suddenly been struck by the terrible thought that it was in fact all just a big joke at our expense. Had we convinced ourselves there was some profundity there, when in fact it was no more than what it appeared to be at first sight: a load of meaningless tripe which Smith was churning out to pay for his booze and drugs.

Happily Morley convinced himself otherwise, but sometimes I'm not so sure. Maybe it's less the contributions of Smith himself, and more the musicians, and everyone else who Smith gathered around him, who made the Fall what they were.
Report duncan idaho January 28, 2018 7:54 PM GMT
i find many of Mark E Smith's lyrics funny, many to be bonkers, others to be plain catchy, some to be inpenetrable, and hardly any to be profound. Not once in 35 yrs of enjoying The Fall have i had a problem with this!
Report screaming from beneaththewaves January 28, 2018 8:34 PM GMT
Fair comment!

As it says, scrawled across the centre of the cover of Hex: HAVE A BLEEDIN GUESS.
Report duncan idaho January 29, 2018 8:57 AM GMT
Laugh

read the other day Brix explaining No Bulbs was simply about their flat being a sh!thole and Mark getting up, not being able to find his belt (which he needed cos he was so skinny), and just as he was at peak annoyance the light bulb blew.

Hope Paul Morley never reads that!
