With the exception of breakfast, I rarely do lunch, and certainly not dinner, without wine or a beer!

Why then is it that, on the rare occasions (one scheduled for Friday) when I have Fish & Chips, there is nothing better than a pot of tea?

Simple solution: cut out the fish and chips and get stuck in to some booze.

The hot tea stops the melted cow fat from setting in the mouth and leaving a beefy aftertaste imo. Essential.

I can't afford fish and chips and have a drink!
My local chippy..

HADDOCK
-------------
White, flaky, boneless, skin-on line caught MSC Haddock with chips and peas.

Fried - £13.45
Steamed/Grilled - £14.45

Shocked It's just a chip shop, nothing fancy but they get away with charging prices like that which to me is a bit fierce and I refuse to pay it on principle even though I do like a nice piece of haddock. I'd rather get a couple of tuna steaks and do a stir fry with it at home for half the price and have a bottle of dry white for the same amount of dosh.

Looks nice Slippy. The fish must be out of this world because everything else seems reasonably priced to me!

I doubt whether cod from Whistable is any fresher than from anywhere else. It's caught then frozen.

Funny that, totally agree. I wouldn't want a beer with fish and chips and like tea (or maybe a diet coke) but I'd hate tea with a curry, it needs BEER!

Noticed some news article the other day about some posh restaurant serving fish sperm on the menu.

Not for me!

I was drinking at Herne Hill the other day, we got talking to a bloke on the train home and turned out he was the owner of Olleys.

Checked the website the next day and , like others. was staggered by the prices.

My local chippy, The Big Catch, in Beckenham does fish for about £5.70 and £2 for a standard portion of chips which is usually more than enough for me.

That's for a takeaway but if you eat in its around £10 mark.

Were you in The Commercial lovegod, opposite the train station? I go in there quite often and pop next door to Betfreds to watch a few races. It has to be the scruffiest bookies in South London! I have been in the revamped Half Moon a couple of times but not so keen on it and the meal we had there before Christmas was quite frankly extremely mediocre and very overpriced. The Crown And Greyhound in the village (a.k.a. The Dog) is OK for a couple of jars.

SB

It was the Saturday before New Year.

We started in the Commercial, then the Prince Regent followed by the Florence then to the Canopy Brewery underneath the arches down the road from Olleys. Have also been in the Half Moon.

We went about a month before, never been drinking in Herne Hill although been through many times on the train. Easy to get to from Beckenham.

Thought all the places we went were ok in different ways.

Been to the Crown and Greyhound many many years ago.

Been past the Alleyns Head on the train, think you've mentioned it before, its an Ember Inn so the interior will probably look like the Railway, West Wickham or the Black Horse at Locksbottom or the Queens Head in Chislehurst?

Tomorrow I will be enjoying a Large Haddock Fillet with chips, mushy peas, tea and bread and butter,
for total £12.20.

Btw, I'm not greedy, as I will be sharing some of mine, with my nieces little girl.

I used to go there every week with my young daughter, kids were free in those days. Then over the road for a look at the canal and a pint at the Navigation.

You are all out of order.
The ONLY pub worth going to is The Great Western Wolverhampton.
Holden's Black Country Mild THE ONLY drink to have (the south is a desert as far as mild goes)
(If it  was in a shed in Millwall I would still praise the place hahah)
I Make special journeys all the way to this place.  You can have long interesting conversations with greyhounds (even with their barefooted owner(yes I know!!) and many other interesting people)

Very friendly staff (nice girls)  lots of basic grub - stews a particular favourite.
Wolverhampton's reputation is not a great one but

there is football, horseracing, and at monmore green - dogs and speedway

just saying.
