Theresa May pledges to ban all avoidable plastic waste by 2042. She's unlikely to be around in 2019 never mind 2042 so what's the point. This was a standard tactic of Tony Blair who was forever promising 5,10, 15 year plans to solve any problems but of course none of them ever came to fruition.  More like something from "Yes Minister".

"avoidable plastic waste"

A phrase which says absolutely nothing.

Reminds me of the advert for a "cold cure" which proclaimed  "may help to relieve the symptons of a cold". Says a lot but says nothing.

The industrial revolution was pretty much finished 100 years ago. (just a btw)

It's simple really.
Don't use so much plastic for packaging, use paper and card. Then there wouldn't be so much waste.

5p a bag for flimsy carriers solves nothing, except a bit more money for supermarkets (especially Sainsburys)
There's more plastic round a bunch of grapes than there is in 100 carriers.

Most of the blame for nearly everything can be placed at the feet of the large supermarket chains.

its the same luvie snowflakes who fuelled the demand for bottled water thinking its cool to walk down a street carrying a water bottle, that are now crying about the waste

theres absolutely zilch chance of me or my parents wasting money buying bottled tap water,so the young snowflakes are destroying their own planet and blaming us all

Again in the main we are the problem for this by not complaining. I use a few companies for online shopping.
M&Ss packing is way over the top with air filled plastic bubble wrap and I complained to them but it's still the same although I'll keep complaining and I'm sure if more do they'll eventually act on it.
Other companies I use reams of crumbled up paper which I find much better. It's slightly thicker than normal but still recyclable.

the supermarkets seem to help fund the political partys

i guess the agenda suits them, but it wasnt long ago they
were trying to do away with glass....

now i can buy new empty jars for £2 each, or buy one with stuff in for less than 50p and wash it
when finished.

my dad tells me the cinema let him in on a saturday morning if he provided an empty jar when he
was a kid

somewhere the country lost the plot.....helped by supermarket advertising!!!

That's the way it was Donny, the jeely jar was prized in those days. Think it stopped in the late 50s or very early 60s.

Why can't the supermarkets supply paper bags instead of plastic?

I have always wondered about this, in the usa they use paper bags.

Surely tomorrow they could make plastic bags illegal.

You always get a paper bag when you buy clothes in Sweden.
