It probably was a genuine accident.
If the girl was operating such a scam: a) she would hardly risk it with a £5 sale; and b) the ruse would soon be exposed after the third or fourth customer complained. |

Could be someone went to buy the scratchie, didn't have the cash and she forgot to cancel the transaction. If it's the first item on the receipt then that would lend weight to my theory.

No No No it's a scam ... only possible explanation.

Nothing new.....the checkout staff will try anything. from simply giving short change, to one that I personally got hit with.
This at Morrison's......she asked if I wanted cash back and I said no. Checking my receipt, whilst still in the store, and it shows cash back £5.00! Checkout supervisor gave me £5.00, without any hassle, and I'm sure they will be monitoring that particular girl! |

Adding £10 to a £5 bill does not sound like the work of a criminal mastermind.
Accidents happen. Just yesterday I almost accidentally shoplifted £100's worth in Sainsbury's. There was some last-minute checkout malarkey when a staff member had to go back to the shelf to swap an item for me, and by the time she came back with it, I forgot I hadn't paid (but luckily was prompted by the cashier while I was still at the picking up bags stage). It is possible OP's cashier accidentally scanned a discarded scratchcard. Heck it's even possible we are both right and the cashier was running a scam but accidentally applied it to OP's half-asleep relative. |

Biggest supermarket scam is carried out by the companies themselves.
Incorrectly marked shelves and discounts not subtracted at the till. Co-op the worst. When you tell them, they will refund you but leave the error still there for less observant suckers. |

While in ASDA packing shopping into the car you may be approached by two very fit looking 18 year old Eastern European girls in tight tiny tops. They wash your windscreen with their boobs pressed against the glass and then ask for a lift to the next Supermarket as payment. During the journey they strip down to perform oral to each other on the back seat. One of the girls will then jump into the front seat and 'pleasure you' while the other attempts to steal your wallet.
I had mine stolen last Thursday, Friday, Saturday and twice on Sunday, so be careful. |

At my local Tesco Express one female member of staff is as crooked as they come and will often try to overcharge or shortchange customers. Sometimes when a customer has a basketful of items she has been know to accidentally forget to place something in the carrier bag and put it by the till instead.
She's totally brazen to the extent that she'll continue to try it on with people she knows are aware of what she's doing ![]() I know someone who works for Tesco and he told me that these Expresses are actually franchises and are effectively Asian corner shops which just happen to sell Tesco's goods. |

Gave the girl twenty pounds at a Lidl and got change for a tenner.
I told her straight away ''I gave you twenty pounds'' she insisted it was tenner. The manager came over took the film out of the camera and took it out the back. Came back out and gave me a tenner out of the till. He said the film showed it was a twenty. Same thing happened at Aldi, only I had hardly got the words out of my mouth before the assistant got another tenner out of the till to give me. No hesitation at all. |

If you are handing over twenties, it's a good thing to fold a corner, and firmly crease it, and several times.

Dr Crippen, when paying with cash I always clearly state the note's value as I hand it over so the cashier knows that I know

I avoid cash as much as possible now we have contactless cards for small purchases. It also avoids loading down your pockets with loose change.

To the OP - that seems a glaringly obvious mistake. Nobody would do something so stupid as to overcharge £10 on a £5 bill!!
But to the poster who stated: Incorrectly marked shelves and discounts not subtracted at the till. Co-op the worst. When you tell them, they will refund you but leave the error still there for less observant suckers. Absolutely spot on. In my local Tesco Express I have bene overcharged as many as 7 items in one basket! Discounts not added and then told 'oh that deals expired now' or reduced items not being scanned as such. When you point out the 'errors' they make you feel like you're the crook!! Not even an apology ordinarily. Gits. |

In a Tesco Express I have, several times, been overcharged at the check out, on wines on offer.
Sometimes it was just not changed in their system, and on a couple of occasions the labels were in front of the wrong bottles! Always had it acknowledged and sorted, until the last time when an end of aisle display had three or four types of decent wine with a label saying "Any Two for £9.00. So I selected two and at the till was asked for almost £11.00. Went off with the assistant to show her and then along comes the female manager with attitude. Very surly, and rude, and wasn't prepared to understand that she was wrong! She was saying that the offer was only for those on the bottom shelf! She wouldn't accept that the fact there were no other prices on the display, meant any two as stated. It wouldn't have hurt, for goodwill, to have accepted it wasn't right, and to let at least myself be allowed the deal and then get it changed. I'm not one to complain but this time I got straight on to head office who were more customer focussed and understanding. I went back the next day and the display had been refilled, but the labels were unchanged! ![]() I sent this to head office, and I know they must have been into her ribs, by the way she was when I next saw her. |
