I was in a shop this morning and a toddler was being a bit of a nuisance.  The mother, in quite a well-spoken voice, said "Tilly, if you keep being naughty I'll give you a yellow card."

I wonder what happens when she picks up 5 yellows in a year.Confused

Disciplining a child in any way these days seems to amount to child cruelty..

I think being called "Tilly" is punishment enough.

Yes Foinavon, I gathered that! There used to be a few Matilda's knocking around back in the day, not a very common name though nowadays.

Mum used to hit sister and me with a leather strap, that was kept at the top of the cellar stairs. We used to scarper and hide in the bathroom, but she would wait and belt us when we came out. Many a mark left on our legs.

On other occasions  she'd give me a slap when I'd done nothing wrong. When I protested, she'd say, think what you'll get if you DO misbehave.

Happy days.

My mother beat me up, twice.

Once because I wanted to go to a fair and must have been pestering about it I expect. She started hitting me and chased me into the living room where I was given a good hiding. The second time I was in the bath and she wanted to come in the bathroom and I would not let her.  She busted the lock and set about me.

BUT, that was all, I don't remember her ever hitting me apart from that.  She worked hard to feed and clothe us.  She got up in the morning to make breakfast for all of us then having finished that she went to a factory where she worked from 9-4 and then came home to do housework, ironing, washing and making us dinner.  When she had finally sat down at about 7pm there would be one or the other of my brothers whining at my mum to iron their favourite shirt and she would get up, wearily, and do it.

Today, maybe social services or the police would have taken my mother away and prosecuted her for child abuse.  But there are two sides to a story. Yes, I don't think what I did deserved a hiding, but considering her punishing routine no wonder she snapped.
