Remake is on c5. The original is such a classic. Couple facts about that you may not know: James Stewart wasn't just an actor pretending he knew something about planes, he was a genuine ww2 b24 pilot who kept a side career in the USAF long after the war, even flew in a raid over vietnam (!) The original version the stunt pilot was tragically killed flying the thing :(
Good couple of facts there, JC, that's sad about the stunt guy. I've got the original on DVD, but never knew those facts. What a guy James Stewart was. (the only' interesting' thing I knew was that the director's son, William Baldwin, had a very small part in the film and his character was killed off before the opening credits finished!) Didn't think the remake was a patch on the original (but then again, not many moderns remakes of old classics are, are they? Don't see the point of most remakes). The original was a great character driven drama; thought all the actors did a superb job, especially Kruger, Stewart, Attenborough and Bannen (the latter's character made me laugh a lot).

Thought the remake was very good for a remake. Obviously not as good as the original but was a good film in itself with a couple of memorable actors/characters from it.

Haven't seen either. Got the original on right now following Shrewds comments. 2 hours and 21 minutes. Will watch to the end if I remain in my poker tourny.

The crash where the pilot dies is actually on youtube. James Stewart, I love the guy :) He could easily, as a "star" have just done education films / propaganda and so on, but he wanted none of it and flew dangerous missions over Germany, totally by his own choice, as he had balls of steel. He ended ww2 as a Colonel, he was a qualified b52 pilot while still acting! He was so tall and lanky they initially didn't want him in the military as he was technically *underweight*

The original is one of my favourite films. I saw the remake but it doesn't compare to the original.
I am thinking of getting a tv, and it will be great watching all those old classics.
