Rodney happened to mention 40 odd years ago to a journo that Bolam was to become a daddy and Bolam(being a very private individual) got the hump with Bewes and never spoke to him again.

That series was a bit before my time but my Dad used to like it. Didn't Bolam refuse to approve of the repeats being shown and he wouldn't do a new series either even though his career was prospering and he knew Bewes was absolutely potless.

Yes, and as @twizzle22 says, they fell out after Bewes told the papers about Bolam's private life.
But that does not really explain why Bewes was potless and couldn't land a decent part on telly -- it's not like Bolam was director general of the BBC.
Bolam was one of our finest television actors and starred in series after series, from the Beiderbecke trilogy to New Tricks with plenty in between. Bewes wasn't. Whether there was more to it than that, who knows?

For my money, "Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads" is still the yardstick for British sit-coms. Script, dialogue, performances (including support cast) all unsurpassed. Peerless.
Goodbye Mr Rodney.

Agree Alun even the film was pretty decent,i remember when the first of our pals got married we used to call him and the wife "Bob and Thelma" jokingly. Shame about the 2 of them not getting on but they seem to have been pretty different characters according to the mail with Bolam being fairly reclusive and Bewes enjoying his fame and wealth. Bolam played one of my all time favourite characters as Jack Ford in the magnificent When the Boat Comes In and of course his long time partner/wife is his fellow co star Susan Jamieson, remember them owning a few horses, probably the best being Credo's Daughter.

Indeed Flanders. The 'spin-off' films from UK sitcoms are notoriously bad, but 'The Likely Lads' was a rare exception to the rule.

(The other one, I hardly need add, is the magnificent "Mutiny On The Buses").

England fail, England forge ahead, lol, that was a brilliant episode, even more brilliant than usual.

I have some recollection of an episode in which Terry (using Bob's money of course) made a 'large' order at the pub, including a couple of pints, a couple of chasers, a pasty or two and packets of crisps, and it all came to about 80p. How times have changed! Be lucky now to get a single packet of crisps for 80p (and there's not much more than a dozen slices of crisp in them!)

Sad when these feuds are allowed to fester on for so long. Bewes' passing just shows the futility of it.
Would love to have seen Bewes, Brush and Bolam reunited for one last sketch at Live Eight.

well according to bolam there was no feud,no ill-will,he looks on fondly of their time together and moved on-as actors do,felt tll had run its course and was best left...must say think he called it right

No feud eh- sell why did they never speak again, even when Bolam knew Bewes was dying!! And why when approached by the media after Bewes died would he not make any comment!

I'd be surprised if the BBC showed that 'England F" episode unless they hastily edit down Terry's views on various foreign people, lest heaven forbid there might be accusations of racism.

James Bolam denies feud with Likely Lads co-star Rodney Bewes
Actor admits pair did not speak for decades but says he has nothing but fond memories of Bewes, who died on Tuesday

Thanks Rommel. I read the Guardian Bewes obituary last night but it didnt say that. I hold no brief for either party but I hope the Bolam quotes are not, "well he would say that, wouldn't he".

Sica Dan's link led me to the clip I was thinking about earlier. I didn't quite get all the items of the order correct - but there were actually a lot more items than I remembered!

Terry and Bob ordered:
2 pints a roast beef sandwich with lots of chutney a pickled onion a pasty a cheese sandwich, a scotch egg and a packet of crisps 2 sausages with mustard
Total: 82p!!

I would apply the above descriptions to the fabulous ' Early Doors'

My favourite with Bolam was the Beiderbecke Trilogy. Loved the dry humour from all the actors in that series, and being a jazzer myself, loved the music as well.

James Bolam was interviewed on Front Row (starts around 10 minutes in, and lasts about 5 mins) available on radio iplayer: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b09fj9k7
Bolam denies: 1) there was a feud -- said they just drifted apart when they stopped working together;
2) that he blocked repeats -- he would not have the power to do so, and in any case, it is repeated all the time.
