The report says it's the newest of Argentinas submarines.
Later on it says it was built in Germany in 1989.
The report also says it surfaced to report a breakdown.
Cannot be any hope surely after 5/6 days. Poor souls indeed Trilby.

Is ufcdan about?  He'll be able to relate directly to this awful situation.  Just imagine what these guys are going through RIGHT THIS VERY SECOND if they're still alive.

May God be with them.

Sad news indeed. Like xmoneyx I didn't know they had any submarines. Just googled it. It's a diesel boat which means it needs to surface for the batteries to be charged. So after five days I doubt they can still generate oxygen. With a crew of only 44 if they can remain calm hopefully they can not use up to much air. If found the Yanks can rescue them. I don't know if it's on old boat but it should have two escape hatches, one either side of the boat so depending on which side it comes to rest one will be accessible. An American DSRV (Deep submergence revue vehicle) could reach them and get them out as all hatches were made a standard size for these reason which made the loss of the crew on the Kursk all the sadder, the Yanks could of got them out but the Russians preferred that they died rather than let the Yanks gather intelligence from the boat. The other thing to take into consideration is how deep is the ocean floor ? Boats have what is called a crush depth were the sea pressure becomes to much for the ships hull causing it to implode. Obviously if this happened thankfully the crews end would be instantaneous. Onto the running out of oxygen they will fall asleep and pass away. But until I hear otherwise I shall hope they are rescued. While many years ago they were our enemy sailors and especially submariners will be holding them in their thoughts and prayers.

Report ufcdan November 21, 2017 1:53 PM GMT
Shame if it was a few hundred feet they could escape through the escape hatch but given the weather and the cold they wouldn't last long. It was said if we ever had to escape like that the corpsman would have to stick a needle in our ear to puncture the eardrum..............fxxk that I think I'd of taken my chances on the bottom plus I've never been a good swimmer. Never saw the need going on a boat that was designed to sink !

Thank Dan, very intersting - esp re DSRVs.

Apparently there's a female on board - isn't that supposed to be bad luck amongst submariners?
Report moisok November 21, 2017 5:21 PM GMT
No, it is unlucky for all sailors.
Report trilby22 November 25, 2017 8:37 AM GMT
Thanks Mo.  Reports suggesting the boat had a massive explosion on board.  At least death would have been fairly instant for them, I guess.  RIP Sad
Report ufcdan November 26, 2017 1:39 PM GMT
I wonder if they set off a torpedo to get it over and done with ! Very sad RIP
Report trilby22 November 26, 2017 1:53 PM GMT
Could be, after they lost the batteries & engines and started sinking in deep water?  Could they have accidently set a torp of whilst loading a tube?  I think I saw somewhere this morning there are unmanned submersibles looking for her.

Awful for the poor families Sad
Report Lady Faye Verrit November 26, 2017 4:40 PM GMT
Truly dreadful to think of the trauma they will have suffered!

I think the reality will be that, when they came to terms that it was going to be all over for them, the only suffering
would be the mental torment, in the knowledge that they would never see their family, and friends again!

They must have always shared a bond with their crew mates, and the stronger ones among them will have kept things as calm as possible!

In the end, and not considering the violence of the suggested explosion, they would simply have become weaker, and weaker, and simply fallen asleep
(at least that is what I hope would have happened)!

A pity that their people can't see the compassion for them, from the ordinary British public!
Report akabula November 26, 2017 6:27 PM GMT
I think they will know that Lady Fay.
Getting help from various countries to aid the search as well.

From a recent report.
On Saturday Russia joined the operation, deploying one of its largest aircraft on Friday night with specialist equipment on board.
Its unmanned submersible, known as the Pantera Plus, can conduct sonar scans up to a depth of 1,000m (3,281ft).

Russia also has a scientific exploration ship on the way from West Africa.
The US Navy also deployed unmanned "mini-sub" vehicles to join the search.
The UK, Brazil, Chile, Norway, Germany, Canada, France, Peru, Colombia and Uruguay are also helping to try to locate the vessel.

Report tictacman1 November 17, 2018 2:28 PM GMT
A missing submarine has been found deep in the Atlantic a year after it disappeared with 44 crewmen aboard.

The ARA San Juan was found more than 2,600 feet deep in waters off the Valdes Peninsula in Argentine Patagonia, the Argentinian navy said.

In a statement, it said a “positive identification” had been made by a remote-operated submersible from the American ship Ocean Infinity, which was hired in the latest search for the missing vessel.

The San Juan was returning to its base in the coastal city of Mar del Plata when contact was lost.

Argentina gave up hope of finding survivors after a search helped by 18 countries, but the navy has continued searching for the vessel.

Would it not be possible to incorporate an escape module in submarines? Something large enough for perhaps two people to resurface and raise the alarm?

Just a thought.

"Would it not be possible to incorporate an escape module in submarines? Something large enough for perhaps two people to resurface and raise the alarm?"
They do AFAIK have means of escape that are relatively simple but depth is a huge issue (low to high pressure quickly).

The simplest way to do it is to have buoys they can eject that will surface fast, then start broadcasting. Remember position as soon as possible so drift isn't an issue, allow a final message to be entered pre release. Say "GPS coordinates at release were : X, Y. Extra information at release is: Major leak aft torpedo room, power lost, settling to bottom, 46 still alive" or whatever.

Not sure why they don't haev such a thing. Give me a budget, I'll make it.
Report Just Checking November 17, 2018 8:08 PM GMT
Exactly same as this bl00dy lost airplane in the far east. Have one built into any plane that goes into the sea that is auto released. We'd likely have known where it went down 1 hour later.

This is 2018, the technology to do this cheaply has been around for a couple decades.
