There have been documentaries over the years and newspaper articles. The slaughtering of unwanted ex racing greyhounds is nothing new. If it was carried out in the name of religion there would be an outcry and it would be stopped. But as it is carried out after sport- well that's alright then!! An absolute disgrace.

I've thought about adopting an ex-racing greyhound but they come across to me as not having much 'character'.Can I be corrected?

What do people think happens to all the useless 2yo colts and fillies. They're not given to 15 year old girls as birthday presents from mummy and daddy.

Greyhounds can make great pets but of course they are large and need a lot of walking.

I have owned several racing greyhounds (as racers)

At the end of their racing careers, all where found good homes, even if it meant kennel bills for a few months while we got them homes.

Vast majority in racing take very good care of them. The trainer I used had 1 or 2 long term greyhounds as they basically where not suitable as pets, so just lived out their days in the kennels well looked after.

Greyhounds make excellent pets as they are basically lazy, only a short walk or a large field where they run for 30-60 secs then walk back and jump onto their beds.

Your comment that Greyhounds need a lot of walking, is a misconception, and untrue.
Greyhounds like up to, two 20mins walks per day MAX

Greyhounds make fantastic pets,I arranged for my daughter and her husband (was scared of dogs) to get a retired bitch who charmed the house. Didnt like walks in the rain, two walks a day and she was brilliant with the two boys as they threw cars, etc at her skipping over them and going into the other room. She saved the car from being burgled twice with a bark that belied her basic cowardice ! Just put to sleep in her 14th year as cancer took its toll, sadly missed in the house.

AT - your point about racing bloodstock is well made.  But, the by-product of this waste is at best excellent Horse-meat for human consumption, and at worst dog-food. These options for various reasons are not popular or available, for excess and redundant greyhounds.

Given our reluctance to eat dog, and the undesirability of feeding dog to dog, it would seem that ground fertiliser (eg - component of Blood Fish and Bone) would seem the most appropriate solution.

I think the greyhounds that run at the licenced tracks are looked after when they've finished racing.
Tis the flappers that are coldly discarded.

Vile treatment of animals in the UK happens every day. 98% of people make sure of that.

Aka - You say "I think the greyhounds that run at the licenced tracks are looked after when they've finished racing".  This view does not seem to be shared by the many organisations that are often quoted as reliable sources on animal welfare issues. My view is that this sport, along with horseracing will produce large numbers of excess stock that will be euthanised before the end of their natural lives.
I was merely pointing out possible uses for this excess stock.

I used to go to Newcastle and Sunderland dogs.
Did one at night stayed overnight then the other in the morning.
The last time I was there they were displaying a poster for an award.
Was about after racing care for greyhounds and sure it mentioned loads of other NGRC tracks were involved.

blackbarn, my 98% wasn't made up. That's the percentage of people who eat meat. Having said it wasn't made up it was wrong. 10% of the 98%, probably make sure that their meat has come from an ethical source, so I should have put 88.2% Wink

Homes should be found for them as a first option. Failing that they should be humanely euthanased. They enter the world as livestock not pets. Same as racehorses. Animal activists should realise that if there was no racing there'd only be very few greyhounds or thoroughbreds. Which is better? A short life or no life at all?

Anyone who treats a dog or horse cruelly should be shot. Magistrates give them a smack on the wrist.

My bro-in-law has greyhounds as pets. One run in the park a day and the rest of the time sprawled out on the lounge. Very affectionate calm and gentle dogs at home.

I worked many years ago as a Head lad in a racing kennel, one of the best jobs in the world if somewhat poorly paid. Greyhounds are lovely dogs and some make great pets, however they are working dogs who during their racing careers live in a kennel environment. As I say some will make great pets and some won't the ones that wouldn't I sadly on quite a few occasions I had to take to the vet to be put down. Some will say that it would be cruel. For me it was not, when I left that dog on the floor I knew it wouldn't be sent to France for vivisection. If I remember the price was about £140. Greyhounds being the preferred breed as their lungs are roughly the same size as ours. Or they could of ended up as flapping dogs owned by ar$eholes like the one in this story or a coursing dog on a travellers site.
For the dogs that were and are suitable I would highly encourage people to think about rehoming a greyhound, they are basically lazy animals who do not require a lot of exercise. They have a great temperament and are affectionate dogs. I grew up with greyhounds from the age of six and have handled hundreds of dogs, in that time I've been bitten twice once breaking up a fight between two dogs and once by a dog that was excitable which had got wound up by two other dogs barking at it from a paddock. Not bad, I think if Jack Russels were racing dogs I think my injury list would be a lot higher ! Only downside to having a greyhound at home is that like all short haired dogs they do tend to moult.

I know the Americans have a terrible record regarding the care of greyhounds after their racing days are over plus even during their racing days it's quite a high turn over sport. Dogs being raced when not entirely fit. As a dual national I did consider it but while I loved the actual care of the dogs highly rewarding the racing side actually bored me to tears which was one of the reasons I left the sport also not conducive to married life.

Kam one example dogs like people have different personalities. A dog I remember would just jump up and down in his kennel all day, he would often have loose stools which he'd be jumping up and down in. On top of that he had happy tail so would wag his tail constantly leaving blood up the walls leaving his kennel looking like a cross between an IRA dirty protest cell and a torture chamber........how could an animal like that be homed ?

You originally said that 98% of people make sure that the treatment of animals in the UK is vile.

You now say that 88.2% of people have that impact BECAUSE 10% of the 98% make sure their meat comes from an ethical source.

And, of course you do not make up statistics to suit your argumentCry

Another load of nonsense from an animal vigilante who was wishing a convicted peado 'all the best' the other other day (Rolf Harris)!!

You are seriously warped Kenny Mann. You posted any more made up stories recently from PETA?
