i usually offer cash upto what i am prepared to pay
its easy enough to find out what they sell for
they usually have targets based around months, and finding out the end of their month can be helpful, ..chat with salesman to find out !! they are great at patter but not so at hiding stuff.
make lower offer towards end of their bonus cycle, ...
if they have your wanted car and you cant find it elsewhere then its not so easy

All he managed to save me on a car was his poxy commission. They also hate cash buyers. They want to sell you HP, warranties and all that other bollox which isn't worth paying for.
My brother's a manager at a big local dealership. All he managed to save me on a car was his poxy commission. They also hate cash buyers. They want to sell you HP, warranties and all that other bollox which isn't worth paying for.

I found a virtually identical car on autotrader and offered them that - it was £500 lower than their price and I told them I will be looking for a few weeks as I had just started looking. They rang me back a few weeks later and accepted.

Pal that works at VW dealership says they have very little movement on used car prices but currently they are offering punters a £500 discount if they take out finance for the purchase.

I didn't understand your comment Capt__F, at first, but isn't the internet a wonderful place.
A few key words, and it's all out there.....
"The main thing is to be in charge.
Play them at their own game.
The salesman may well be more desperate for the deal than you are to buy.
Deflate him at every opportunity and stay aloof.
If it's cloth say you really wanted leather. If it's leather say you really wanted cloth!
Let him know you have seen two others and need to buy today. Tell him that, in fairness, one was a bit up on miles, but you prefer his to the other one, except that the price is too strong!
Say it needs to be closer to £**** and then ask if he will give you five minutes, to look around it on your own.
Come back after ten minutes as, in the meantime, he will have the sales manager into his ribs.
He will now hit you with "their best price" but, whatever it is act disappointed, and look as if you are about to leave.
He will now ask what does he have to do to get your business.
Now you will say that the other one comes with a full tank of fuel, three months guarantee, and free first service (or whatever you want to chuck in).
The salesman is now so screwed up that he wants to go outside and throw up!
He will say that if he can match that can he have your business.
Now say you need to go and phone the other dealer.
Leave him for ten minutes to get a thrashing from his manager, and come back in.
Whatever they now offer may be as good as it is going to be, but you still have one more chance which is to leave.
Tell him how disappointed you are, and go outside, and pace around looking like you are on the phone.
Either they will grab you, or you go back in with a big smile, and generous hand shake.
What you never want, is to have "buyers remorse", thinking could I have got a better deal"

Amazing..almost what i did today to a T.Told the salesmanwaller i had a test drive with another dealer(which was the truth).Could see the panic setting in.Drove the other car (i liked it very much)and then told the salesmanwaller i would sleep on it and make my decision over the weekend.
Within a couple of hours he was on the blower offering a better deal with a few goodies thrown in.
I sounded unimpressed
Told him i was going back to the second dealer to discuss my options and i would give him a definite answer on Mon/Tues.
Watch this space if you are interested in the outcome.
P.S. Bet spotty is itching to write summat derogatory

Surely it would make sense to go to an auction, give a local mechanic a few quid to give a car you like the once over. I've bought a couple of cars at auction and both times got good deals.

Bought the car for the advertised price.Only managed to get a full tank of petroleum, a leather front seat armrest and car mats thrown in.I must be losing my touch.
