government is melting down the old ones handed in.

there will still be way too many not handed in to become really valuable

but you cant complete your collection from change in your pocket
so now have to buy....

the new ones are currently soulless, but sure to be some nice pictures
on future issues.

Worth about £30, I think there are other designs as well that are worth more than face value, but not sure which ones.

Themes have followed a similar pattern over the years with the four constituent countries of the United Kingdom being represented in cycles. The rarest One Pound coin currently in circulation is the Edinburgh £1 which was part of the series depicting the capital cities of the UK.

The Edinburgh design is the only £1 coin with a mintage below 1 million and by way of comparison, over 443 million Royal Arms shield £1 coins were issued in 1983. The 2011 Cardiff £1 and the 2010 London £1 follow closely behind, so all very sought after £1 coins to have.

Another coin to look out for is The Royal Arms £1. Although this is a common design which is regularly ignored, make sure to look out for one with a 2008 date – that’s actually the fourth rarest £1 coin.

Anyone remember going through old silver coins to see if there was any pre 1947 and pre 1920 ones, as they were worth a lot more due to the higher silver content, particularly pre '20.

Everyone seemed to be at it, even asking for bags of silver at the banks, to see if they could find an old one amongst them. I had a jam jar full of them.

I can't remember when that was exactly. Late 70s? Or was it to do with decimalisation? Doesn't seem 46 years ago!

i got one with an indian chic on

you could still find them until the size of coins was reduced, but they
were pretty rare in circulation by then, finding a george 6 10p only
to see it was 1947 or later was gutting!

5p reduced about 1990, 10p a couple of years later.

we used to go into banks and get £100 in silver, and they never charged.

pay em in elsewhere, go get another bag...

off to dealers with silver coins 30p or so for a 5p, more for a very old one, but
checked dates for the rare ones too

grandad had a pub,  we took his on condition we took the foreign coins as well as
5p 10p etc, ive got loads of foreign coins still , lol

Interesting, but when was that donny?

I remember a period of maybe 3-6 weeks?, in which everyone was at it, but then the valuable coins got rarer and rarer, and the practice ceased nearly completely.

Just trying to put a date on it, was it anything to do with decimalisation (1971)?

inflation eats away any profits of old notes etc  unless they are really rare .

a £10 note from say 1972 would be bringing you a heavy loss if you sold it today for £100
Report Coachbuster • October 17, 2017 2:04 PM BST
how come there was a £20 note back in the 70s, but no £200 note today  ?

i think we were doing it from around 1973/4

the oil crisis forced up the price of gold and i think
it was the bunker hunt family tried to corner the silver
market in around 1980 which made these coins very much
more valuable.

even before decimalization kids had a keen interest in
inspecting coins as they dated back to around 1860 or so

cheque guarantee cards came in around 1970 and the need for large banknotes decreased
as more folk took up bank accounts

increase in credit cards too

the users of large amounts of large banknotes tend to be those avoiding something

we have a £50 note in england that is not popular as is hard to spend, scotland and n ireland and jersey
have £100 notes that are even harder to spend

eu have 200 euro and 500 euro, the 500 is being phased out as it attracts the wrong sort of person
and i have never seen a real 200 euro on my travels.

bitcoin has appeared to help those that need large untraceable "cash" amounts

Thanks donny, that sounds about right.

thanks for the very good answer donny - I  hadn't really thought along those lines but it makes perfect sense .
