Should be moving to solid state drives imo.

Yes solid state drive would be good. All reflected in the price.
Laptop is for my Dads 70th hence the 17inch screen. |

I bought an HP 17 inch last week and its great, only use it for watching films, playing poker/betting, various small stuff tbh, but its fast and zero problems setting it up etc
only got an AMD A9 in it aswell so the one you want will be easily enough for what he might use it for. I was in two minds between a HP and a Dell but glad I made the HP choice |

The existing laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1750 bought in 2010. It's built like a brick and the only fault with it is the battery. They don't seem to make laptops like they used to imo

Yes and no. Most laptops are built for the consumer market where price is most important. More rugged laptops for companies are more expensive: the main name is Lenovo (previously IBM) Thinkpads but even Apple Macs count. Bad news: they are expensive. Good news: refurbished ones are cheap and usually good value because companies will replace laptops according to some predetermined schedule while they still work. |

So it seems buying direct from the manufacturer gives more choice and value than from the likes of PC World or John Lewis.
It is now a toss up between Dell: http://www.dell.com/en-uk/shop/laptop-and-2-in-1-pcs/inspiron-17-5000/spd/inspiron-17-5770-laptop/cn77001 and Hewlett Packard: https://store.hp.com/UKStore/Merch/Product.aspx?id=1US08EA&opt=ABU&sel=NTB ![]() |

Regarding the Dell, would it really be worth upgrading to the next model for an extra £170 for a solid state drive? Really that much quicker?

I'd buy that one, and then put in an SSD myself.
however warranties, etc, might or might not be a problem. as for the speed, it will make a difference, but it depends on what you're doing with the laptop. If you're not gaming on it (i'm presuming a 70 year old isn't spending all day playing Dota and Witcher 3 - although there are worse ways to spend your retirement), it will be particularly noticeable for boot times, and waking from sleep. |
