Asda, Tesco or Sainsburys all have vacancies. Steady little number for someone looking for a six month career break?

Mate of mine was a delivery driver for Tesco a little while back. It's not the doddle of a job most people think.
You're constantly being monitored by the store, under pressure to make more and more deliveries.
The stores don't take into consideration the difficulties in making deliveries, eg tower blocks where the lifts don't
work, having to carry slabs of water, sometimes half a dozen because they're too heavy for the buyer to get home.
parking is a big problem, sometimes having to park some distance from the address.
It's not just a matter of dropping Mrs.Jones carrier bag of goods off. Speak to someone who's doing it first before
taking the plunge.
Report cooperman • October 14, 2017 10:34 AM BST
Yep, usually a good reason for so many vacancies. Can't be much fun when it's icy, lashing down, snowing etc.
Report ufcdan • October 14, 2017 11:14 AM BST
They have times for distances eg roundabout to roundabout, length of time to be spent with a customer in which time you have to make sure the person receiving the goods is age appropriate for all the goods and also telling them about upcoming promotions. If anyone get hit by one get an injury lawyer I doubt it would take to much delving into to find fault. Was behind an ASDA van going 40mph past a school ! Oh and by the way as I've mentioned ASDA they will get to read it, they have a company that's trolls the Internet looking for negative comments from staff Mischief

All supermarkets are ramping up pressure on customers who use plastic bags, like it was them who invented and profited from their over use.
It means that more and more home deliveries will be loose items in the future, slowing deliveries and adding extra pressure on delivery drivers.
Because sure as eggs are eggs enterprise doesnt accept the argument that things become less efficient and slower, hence the ball breaking of drivers.
I worked at tesco unloading the trucks while I was at uni many years ago.
There was an old bird there who had worked for the company for 25 years and was retiring.
The gave her a bunch of flowers.

The thought never even crossed my mind.
Why would I pay the money that a share holder corp doesnt?

I have vastly different standards to share holder corps. Tips given to taxi drivers, hairdressers, restaurant waiting staff, delivery workers etc etc etc.

Do not attempt to subsidise enterprise for the short comings in the pay they offer.
Clement said 'its not for those to give to charity, but to pay their taxes gladly' or words to that effect.
Its the same here, if enterprise drive down the value of workers then subsidising that creates a precedent.

Like when the tories try and count foods banks as part of the benefits package.

Report cooperman • October 14, 2017 2:45 PM BST
Aye, tipping is an anathema to me. USA a good example, carp wages and staff encouraged to build up customer checks to receive larger tips instead of paying a living wage ffs. 20% expected for bringing a plate of food or opening a bottle of beer, ridiculous.
Report Lady Faye Verrit • October 14, 2017 9:42 PM BST
I've been using Morrisons for a few months now.....

Because I'm a tight fisted old git, I don't want to pay £4.50 for delivery, so elect for unsociable hours, such as
before 07:00 or after 22:30.....cost £1.00

On a 06:30 delivery, he said I was his third drop, and starts in Leeds at 05:00 (I'm in YO8)!

On a 22:30 drop, he still had two to go, and then had to go back to Leeds!

He couldn't find me, and was trying to call my mobile, but there is only enough service here to send/recieve a text,
so it was almost 23:00 before he arrived!

Tipping never came into my mind but, now it has been mentioned, I will consider this as, if everyone chucked in at least £1.00,
it would be a significant difference for the guys!

Report dustybin • October 15, 2017 4:20 PM BST
If they have a difficult job it is within an environment of profit.

My personal experiences are of me opening the gates to the estate and them wheel a railway trolley upto the back door.
All finished within 10 mins, no strains no issue.

Why would I tip that?

If people deem effort to exceed reward then responsibility is with those whom profit.
Report dustybin • October 15, 2017 4:30 PM BST
I is typical of the human consiounce to acrue guilt for others' loss when we see struggle.
It is true we all should feel guilt, not for the travesty of the singular effect, but because we all allowed ourselves to be dragged into a culture of greed.

Offers of benevolence are nothing and gifts of aid. If man works for others in the way that the west has forced all people born of this generation shackled to the system made by others, then those who dont work and yet profit must sacrifice.

You have been thrown to the woleves and money has been the excuse.

I think the job is difficult - esp at night ,finding somewhere to park, congestion , time limits ,parking fine risks , sometimes bad weather ,difficult customers  etc  ...and for what reward and thanks ?

So yes, they deserve something extra .

It's not a compulsory thing dusty ,you don't have to tip  ...but if i'm in a position to pay 3 or 4 quid for the luxury of a delivery van ,then i can afford a pound as a trip . Or, i go to the store myself.  Simples

It is the place of the shop who crush all around them, homogenise the high street and break suppliers and workers alike to pay for the effort.
Report dustybin • October 16, 2017 1:20 AM BST
Its the wormy fart of opportunism.
You see it every day where profits are massarged by banks etc whith rewording of TCs etc so as to cut costs
Suppliers are punnished etc so shareholders can be rewarded while doing f--k all
Report pxb • October 16, 2017 4:39 AM BST
Most if not all grocery home delivery operations will be losing money. They do it to keep in the game until it does become profitable, or even to keep in the grocery business.

Grocery home delivery used to be the norm, but stopped when labour got too expensive and there wasn't always someone at home as more women worked. The economics hasn't really changed and I suspect it will never be profitable except as a niche, because most people won't be willing to pay the real cost.
Report parispike • October 16, 2017 9:36 PM BST
Did it or 6 months between better paid jobs. Impossible to stick to "their" timings which are dependant on everything going precisely to plan and compiled by someone who has no idea nor interest in what really happens. I'd like to suggest that the odd sh@g held me up but alas it never happened.
Report pxb • October 17, 2017 1:26 AM BST
Everyone is losing money on home delivery, but Amazon loses least, and that's their plan - drive the rest broke.

Having loss leaders are common in business, if it wasn't still of tactical benefit they wouldn't do it, it doesn't change the fact that the pressure is on the worker.
