TOTP 1984 just opened up the most important debate of the latter 21st century!

What a can of worms!

named after a french magazine that they mistranslated as hurried fashion, it seems fitting that they
didnt know how it should be pronounced either.

It's not Depesh Mode in French. No long 'o' in that language.

It's somewhere between Depesh Mod and Depesh Maud.

Looking at the original french which is apparently Dépêche mode, Daypesh would be correct? Wow thanks to the internet we have this!:

I should explain what that link is, thought I had but deleted the line :)
It's a music journalist from that era who has a cassette interview with one of the band from back then who is explaining that they originally DID call themselves depeshAY but then went to France to be told by french people they were pronouncing it wrong :)

I remember everyone calling them Depeshay when they first came out. I was never really a fan of their music but it was sacrilege to say that around these parts in the 80's.
Incidentally my brother used to go to Chelsea games with Andy Fletcher in the mid 90's and reckons he's a top bloke.

Depeche Mode are my favourite band of all time, I've seen them countless times live and they always produce the goods.
