An angler had to be resuscitated after accidentally swallowing a fish he had just caught during a prank.

The 28-year-old had been "joking around" when the six-inch (14cm) Dover sole wriggled out of his
hand and jumped into his mouth, South Western Ambulance Service (SWAS) said.

He stopped breathing and suffered a cardiac arrest on the scene at Boscombe Pier, Bournemouth.

Paramedics managed to remove the fish with forceps in an ambulance.

The man had been fishing at Boscombe Pier, Bournemouth

Ambulance worker Matt Harrison said: "It was clear that we needed to get the fish
out or this patient was not going to survive the short journey to Royal Bournemouth Hospital.

"I was acutely aware that I only had one attempt at getting this right as if I lost grip
or a piece broke off and it slid further out of sight then there was nothing more that
we could have done to retrieve the obstruction."

Mr Harrison said the fish's barbs and gills became stuck but he eventually succeeded in
pulling it out in one piece with forceps.

He said it was the "most bizarre" call-out he had ever attended.

Paramedics managed to restart the man's heart at the pier after working on him for three minutes.

They praised the angler's friends who had performed CPR before the arrival of emergency crews
at about 23:00 BST on 5 October.

Mr Harrison said: "We're all so glad the patient has no lasting effects from his cardiac arrest,
which could so easily have had such a tragic and devastating outcome."

BBC quick to identify it as a Dover Sole.
wonder if they'd have been so quick if it had been a Sole from Calais that wandered into our waters. Angry

A Dover Sole is a flat fish, now I could believe it if it was a mackerel !

Nobody concerned about the poor fish then?

Took a bit of a battering by the sound of it.

The fish species is a red herring.
Report Crisp77 • October 12, 2017 6:36 PM BST
Been quite a few accidents on that Pier over the years. Sounds like he is the sole survivor.
Report Just Checking • October 12, 2017 6:49 PM BST
I'm guessing he was dangling it over his mouth, maybe for a photo?

Was just reading today of yet another person killed getting a "selfie" ... this time jumping up on a cliff edge while someone else took a photo and .. they fell off the cliff. Makes me wonder if the person who died falling from height in that cathedral yesterday was yet another "selfie death", seems quite likely. You can just see it, lean over railing, hold phone out, lean a bit more, a bit more ..

The fish was named by police as Mr Throaty MacThroatface of Folkestone. Asked what he was doing in Bournemouth Mr Macthroatface said he was "just out for an early morning swim" when he was attacked with a large metal hook by the assailant. The only way he had of fighting back was to attempt to throttle his attacker. The case has been adjourned for further reports.

Darwinism in action here. By the end of the decade there won't be any humans left alive who take selfies.

Seen a clip on you've been framed years ago with a young kid kissing a rod caught fish and it diving into his gob ,it was way to big and got stuck and was quickly retrieved but as everyone laughed I was thinking that could have been a disaster ,Rex Hunt started the kissing malarkey although maybe John Wilson done it too , fish are diff things to handle at best of times, many sea fish have very sharp fins, gill plates and defence spines ect ,Rex Hunt made a joke out of it and kissed all sorts of  predator species but he knew what he was doing ,this prat is lucky to be alive
