The past is gone.
The future has not arrived
So all we have is the present.
But if you think about these three different time zones you can get strange statements.
for example.
1 there is nothing to can do now or in the future that will change the past.
2.the future can effect the present. For example you open a letter right now telling you a tax refund will be posted to you in the next few days value 50 grand.(that will effect
the present )
3.your past can change your future.(you could have done something yesterday that will effect tomorrow)
4. the second you think of the present it is gone forever.and a new present arrives.

Are you and Eternalist or a Presentist, Brassneck?
Report brassneck • October 3, 2017 11:54 PM BST
5 another old saying that is true is "that the past does not equal the future"meaning you can change everything about yourself in the present, thats if you can catch the present.
but if the present only lasts a mili second I guess we really only have two time zones=past and future.
So the secret is to make the present last as long as you can.Confused

You have a future only when you have no present.

and if you have a present you forget to even think about the future.

True enough, it's a timeless question.

I think it's our mind trying to grasp the concept of increasing entropy and not doing very well.
Einstein liked to believe the Block Universe theory as it fitted well with his Theory of Relativity. We, on the other hand, will have to sleep on it.

If the present lasts only for a few milliseconds is it possible to see into the future, but only for a few milliseconds , a premonition a feeling ?
I have thought so sometimes.

I think you have too much time on yer hands Brassie.
Learn from your mistakes and live in the present with an occasional glance to the future. Sorted.

Hi Foinavon,i believe that when we go or die or whatever,i think we pass over to some other state ,I not sure about heaven .but I think that what ever journey we are on will continue ,so I guess I am an eternalist.
I once went to a hypnotist to give up smoking and he said to me he would take me back to my past lives.i told him "no thanks" but he done something to me to put me in a trance.when I came out of it he told me that when I was 8 years of age I walked down a school corridor wearing a green and white hooped jumper(I had told him in my trance that I had this kind of jumper).but I could not remember this jumper when I came out of the trance.but when I checked with my mother she agreed that I had a green and white hooped jumper when I was 8 years of age.Grin
The hypnotist also told me that I had been rowing on a galley ship a thousand years ago ,and that I had told him.
so its very strange ,but I can not remember.
So I will row in with the Eternalist.

Interesting that when I post it disappears for a while - and may or may not appear in the future.  Anyone else have this time-delay?  Maybe it's key words.

We are a spaghetti-like strand in space-time. "We" may be just sentient wave-fronts moving through a life - myriad others in front and behind. Don't fancy moving though some of your lives. Well, erse in particular.

I guess time is like a computer, and the present just keeps updating, the past is old data and the future is the updated present.
remember Albert Einstein said that the concept of time travel is possible,so who says he is wrong?
Albert has already done the maths for time travel its just the technology that lagging behind, and these worm holds in the universe could be time tunnels.GrinGrinGrinGrin

It's the persistence of memory, brassie (see Salvador Dali).

Our brains remember everything when we are young but our conscious brain can't (or won't) recall most of it unless prompted in some way.

Definitely going to sleep on it now and relive pleasant memories.(or nightmares)Scared
Report brassneck • October 4, 2017 12:22 AM BST
that's string theory.Cool
Report bodil • October 4, 2017 12:30 AM BST
It's not string theory. Time travel is possible, it just takes unimaginable amounts of energy.  You really want to visit the past that much?  I'd prefer most of it to be never, never ever revisited. And in the future you're a long time dead.
Report brassneck • October 4, 2017 12:34 AM BST
But the brain does not just remember every thing that happened ,the experts believe that the brain has stored every thought you have ever thought and has it stored.Shocked
even the idea of tasting something 20 years ago can be remembered,or smelling paint can be recalled by our memory bank.
if you ever smelled/smelt SULFURIC ACID you can smell it again with memory. biting into a lemon by imagination can effect your taste glans.
So reality may not be what we think it is/more a case of reality is what we focus on,and then we think that (IT IS).

There's this theory of mind that says that the you and I exchanging messages are merely helpless passengers (the ghost in the machine). We think we are in control but brain scanning shows that when we decide to have, eg, a cup of coffee, the actual nerve impulses to achieve that end were triggered before we had the thought. So it seems "the body" is saying I'm going to have that donut/bottle of wine and sod you.  It probably needs a life-changing event, like attending a country music festival on the Las Vegas strip, to effect permanent change. Which is why we piss our lives away on chit chat after midnight.

and another thing I would like to say about people in general.
Most people want something that they have not got.And they think that by having this item that it will make them happy.
and when they get the item that they always wanted they move on to get another item.
in other words we are never happy with what we have got.(with most people)
So the answer to all this is to be happy.(because that is all we seek)
But I don't understand what part of the brain decided that we need to have something that we have not got,why can the brain(your inner self) just say "all you need to do is be happy all the time and you will not want anything"
But that's too easy for the brain, the brain will come back with an answer saying"you need a new car,you need that girl in the red hot pants, you need a condo in spain and then you will be happy"
so I am thinking that part of the brain has a mind of its own and needs to chase to be happy or expand itself.
And if I keep listening to this part of the brain I will be chasing all my life after material items instead of spending my time convincing the part of the brain that wants all the time that I am happy.ConfusedPlainGrinCoolBlushLoveShockedSadSadCryDevilExcited

That sounds just about right Bodil,i something think that the mind has already selected my next bet before I even see who's playing or what horses are running ,and the mind is having a bad run at the moment.GrinI would sack my mind if I was in charge.Laugh

If we "thought" that way we would still be floating in the ocean utilizing sunshine to live and breed (with no predators). Oh yes.

I think that there is certain cells in the brain and they are addictive cells.(and they are past their sell by date)
and all day long they crave to be satisfied.smoking cells, drink cells, gambling cells, and so on.
Now people blame the subject instead like tobacco,or alcohol ,slot machines ,but the real problem are these PTSBD cells.
Someone needs to find out where these addictive cells lurk in the brain and remove them ,or come out with an anti addictive bottle of tonic. Some women can not stop spending, others can not stop eating ,others can not stop jogging, and its all addiction.
So science needs to start looking for the addictive cells or compulsive disorder cells and stop blaming the product.
IT SHOULD NOT BE TOO DIFFICULT TO FIND OUT WHAT PART OF THE BRAIN RELEASES A CHEMICAL WHEN IT IS STARVED OF THE ADDICTION,AND THE SAME TREATMENT WOULD CURE ALL ADDICTIONS.
So science should look inwards into the brain for the cure for addictions instead of blaming outwords.
And then everyone can do everything in moderation .
Report bodil • October 4, 2017 1:45 AM BST
The addictive chemical pathways are pretty well known but I've got a blue moon in my eyes and am away for today.  Like a dog to its vomit I'll be back. Ask again.
