The Wire i only saw about first 7 episodes , then missed one , never got back to it . Up to that point i'd not seen any characters or scenes that i'd not already seen in hundred other cop shows and movies .But maybe it picks up a lot after that .

Series 1 to 3 (especially Series 2) of 'The Wire' is definitely worth a watch. Quality control dropped off later on, and I thought the final series was so poor I gave up.
'The Sopranos' is probably a bit overrated. Can't say I went out of my way to keep up with it all the way through. I did stick it to the end.
I'm going to suggest an alternative. Try 'DAMAGES'. They made 5 series and having watched the first 4, I can highly recommend it.
The good thing is that you can also watch it cheaply. Each series can be bought very cheaply at Amazon. Either buy the entire 5 series in one quite cheap box set, or try them one by one at low cost.

The Wire has the most fascinating mix of Characters you'll ever see in one box set
Storyline's good & keeps you guessing , though does drop off a bit in series 4 i think , all about the kids , but makes the Soprano's really quite boring in comparison

Seen both twice now and would put The Wire ahead of Sopranos. Sopranos sometimes seemed a bit of a send-up whereas The Wire just felt more real. Needs subtitles though.

The Sopranos for me - really enjoyed Series 1-3 of the Wire but it was hard work in parts and I wouldnt watch it again - Sopranos much funnier, and bears repeat viewings.

I would say if anything, the opposite. The Sopranos was much funnier and with The Sopranos' having less main characters the characterisation was much stronger and made the people more believable. Carmella, for example had a real depth of character, one the viewer really understood - The Wire never got that far, eventhough it was great.

Love both shows have watched each start to finish a few times ove the years! Which is best....... for me the wire by a short nose... imo the sopranos could have been better had they not killed off some great characters so early, Richie aprile was fantastic!
