I use those pliers that are very narrow at the end.

My everyday watch was so cheap it will probably cost less to replace the watch when the battery dies

I always change my own. Have a back opening tool off ebay that allows you to properly open funny backs without resorying to mangling it with a screwdriver and it cost just a few quid, and I've a watchmakers screwdriver set for removing the tiny screws that often hold the battery in place.

Points to note are to be careful with those screws (so like do on a table maybe in a tray not standing over some wooden floor with gaps for them to fall in - like I did once) and pay attention to how it comes apart as some have a wierd contact onto a thing stuck on the back for a beeper, if it has it.
