A section of the M3 motorway is closed in both directions after reports of "potential hazardous material" on the road, police have said.

Police said a bomb disposal team was at the scene of the closure between junctions nine and 11 at Winchester.

Drivers who were stuck in stationary traffic for nearly 12 hours were forced to abandon their cars as a major UK motorway was closed over a bomb scare for the second time in a week.

The M3 was shut down in both directions from junctions nine to 11 in Hampshire at 4am today after police were called to a 'serious incident' near a footbridge between junctions 10 and 11.

Someone lobbed a flammable substance over a bridge over the M3 near Winchester. Probably a can of petrol. What should have taken an hour, possibly 2 hours at the most, to clean up in fact took about 6 hours before the motorway was reopened. Overkill or what! The stuff had probably evaporated by then in any case.

Luckily at the time of the incident I was heading away from Winchester towards London, so didn't affect me.
