London’s transport regulator has declined to renew Uber’s licence to operate in the city, saying that it is not “fit and proper,” in the latest blow to the $68bn ride-hailing app.
Transport for London said in a statement that it will not issue Uber a private hire licence after the expiry on September 30.
“TfL has concluded that Uber London Limited is not fit and proper to hold a private hire operator licence,” the regulator said. “TfL considers that Uber’s approach and conduct demonstrate a lack of corporate responsibility in relation to a number of issues which have potential public safety and security implications.”
The news deepens the woes for Uber, the biggest of the latest generation of Silicon Valley technology giants. The group picked Expedia’s Dara Khosrowshahi as its new chief executive in August after co-founder Travis Kalanick was forced to step aside after a series of scandals.
Uber said that it plans to “immediately challenge [the decision] in the courts.” The San Francisco-based group added that if the decision stands, “it will put more than 40,000 licenced drivers out of work.”
TfL said that Uber has 21 days to appeal the decision and that it can continue to operate until the process has been completed.
London mayor Sadiq Khan said he “fully” supports TfL’s decision: “Providing an innovative service must not be at the expense of customer safety and security,” he said.

This kind of service is the future. Uber themselves are a fcking disgrace. There needs to be proper solutions in all sectors where tech is integrated in a proper and sustainable way.

bear in mind that's over half a million people who believe that they are entitled to a private chauffeur service at dirt cheap rates where most of the drivers are getting less than the minimum wage.

They are a company that doesn't give a flying fck about making money in the medium term. Upping fares due to a lack a competition is the end game alright.

no. they don't give a sh1t about money because they want to own the self-driving taxi market which will replace personal car usage in under 15 years time.

that's the end game. thing is, they own a piece of fungible technology, so they actually have no intrinsic value. I'm be amazed if car manufacturers just don't offer up the service themselves, quite why you'd outsource  it to someone else is a mystery.

Really looking forward to this 'Fit and Proper' person test being applied (both now and retrospectively) to people who actually want to come to live in Britain.

If it's good enough for the company/drivers, it's certainly good enough for the immigrants.

Uber drivers should have to satisfy the regulatory demands put on black cab drivers or they should never have been granted a license in the first place. Cameron has questions to answer for bringing pressure to bear on Johnson on behalf of UBer.
