Found at 730am. Taking a very long time to check it out. I don't believe it's a bomb. It would have to be pretty massive to take down a bridge, so why put it there?

Let me guess, this is another instance of "the terrorists won't change our way of living", right?

The suspicion is that the police have given the public a gentle reminder of who really controls their ability to get from A to B.

You wouldn't need to take down the Bridge, Causing a 3 Mile Jam and setting a couple of bombs off Among it would bring total carnage Sad Hopefully our Friends never think of this Plain Often crossed my Mind when stuck in a Jam,no one can go anywhere and thousands of Petrol tanks Plain

Thames Valley Police said in a statement released almost seven hours after the incident was first reported that "Investigators are continuing a chemical analysis of the object to determine its make-up."

My estimate to the probable chemical constitution of the contents of the bag are...

An aqueous solution of greater than 95% water, with the remaining constituents, in order of decreasing concentration urea 9.3 g/L, chloride 1.87 g/L, sodium 1.17 g/L, potassium 0.750 g/L, creatinine 0.670 g/L and other dissolved ions, inorganic and organic compounds.

At least that is what the Thames Valley police have been taking all day...

It's about time that all traffic duties were taken from the over-stretched police force and given to someone whose top priority is to allow the "Average Joe" taxpayer to use the resources that their taxes have provided.

Keep Calm and Carry On?  If only as a motorist you could...

@Petraco -- it is the same with all these incidents. It's cleared up after an hour and then the road stays shut for a day while the forensics types crawl all over it looking for evidence that in most cases won't tell them any more than they can see on the cctv and a search of the suspect's home.

And of course, said home can't be searched without half a dozen film crews in tow, and the evacuation of the rest of the street in case it has been boobytrapped with a new kind of bomb that only kills neighbours and not coppers or TV crews.

The thing that I found perplexing is that you see crap at the side of the motorway all the time.  What was so special about this crap as to raise suspicion so starkly?

Was it a Lidl bag, perhaps?

A suspcious package which closed the M1 for 10 hours was filled with acid and may have been left deliberately, police have revealed.

A five-litre container of a highly corrosive substance, believed to hydrochloric acid which at a high concentration can burn skin and cause fatal injury, was pouring across two lanes of carriage way when police blocked off the road, leaving commuters stuck while the incident was dealt with.

Thanks for that, Tictacman!  Guess that explains it!

So one big bag of baking soda would have allowed the thousands of people who were stuck on the motorway to have gone on their way...
