Place a fist slightly above your navel.
Grasp your fist with the other hand and bend over a hard surface — a countertop or chair will do. Shove your fist inward and upward. http://www.mayoclinic.org/first-aid/first-aid-choking/basics/art-20056637 No idea whether it works or not. |

I watched a video by a paramedic who recommends kind of throwing yourself to the floor:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iz8M0UTkvSU I'll keep that in mind as a last resort. looks like it'll work but pretty brutal! The first resort is trying to cough, or I believe you can kind of fist up into your abdomen like you're trying to heimlich yourself, or you can find the back of a chair and force your guts into as well. https://www.prevention.com/health/healthy-living/travis-stork-what-do-if-you-start-choking-when-youre-alone The paramedics idea looks like it might work though, as the last resort! This one .. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=819wPbYkvSg Kind of shows a self heimlich. This shows the chair one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FEr9jjZ6fi8 |

Being deaf, I really hate instructional videos which comprise just talking.
I guess I'll go for flinging myself to the floor, if it ever comes to it, simply because the guy in that video is the only one who actually shows you what to do. The other two could be assembling a cupboard from Ikea for all I know. |

The second one is ridiculous I could see he was one of these irritating people who does a 4 minute video to cover something that takes 20 seconds so I just fast forwarded to about 3/4 way in when I saw him doing the d&mned thing :)
I hate youtube videos like that where they talk for ages and just dont get to the D*MNED POINT! |

Ah! Thanks. Found it hidden at 3 mins in.
Christ. Imagine being near death, the ambulance turns up, and that guy steps out. Almost a relief that I can't use the phone to make a 999 call. |

Yes the guy was ridiculous. Thank god for that youtube feature where you can kind of fastforward instantly using the progress bar. IT's so useful when I use my DVR or the clunky iPlayer where you have to actually fast forward/rewind it feels like the dark ages!
Here's another chair one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ns5rEbfLl3g Oh god HOW MANY YOUTUBE VIDEOS HAVE THAT KARLY KLOSS WIX ADVERT! It seems like every second bl00dy video has that irritating advert! |

And in the side bar, here's how to heimlich a dog
![]() https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gT_vNktCbyw There was a guy in the news recently that should have used that as a "defence" ![]() |

Place a fist slightly above your navel. As a fat b'stard that's me dead then. Me arms a'int long enough. Still if i've gotta go then via food isn't a bad way. |

Thanks, Just Checking, about the throwing yourself to the floor when choking when you are alone. I am often alone and several times I have choked on a piece of food and it has scared the life out of me. I have read the other ways about doing the heimlich when alone but this procedure seems much more straightforward when you are panicking.
