year investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

Detectives are struggling to resolve a final lead, which, if it fizzled out, could have brought the £11m Government-funded investigation to an end next month.

I understand that the Home Office is willing to carry on paying for the last bit of work to be completed.

A source said: "We will be asking for more money because we need to complete the work we are doing. It is complicated and not as straightforward as we had hoped, but it is worth doing."

Madeleine was nearly four years old when she vanished without trace from her family's rented holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in May 2007.

Maybe the McCann's could run a crowd funding campaign to get funds from their supporters.

200 kids missing in Spain, hundreds of kids missing in the UK, and limited resources are being spent on a lost cause.

It's a pity the police don't get paid on results, that would concentrate their minds.

It would seem the parents are happy for this to remain a missing person case for a while yet.

Sky's crime correspondent Martin Brunt says the funds will be used for operational, administration and employment costs for the small Scotland Yard team still investigating Madeleine's disappearance.

"There is an ongoing theory about what happened to Madeleine McCann," he said.

"It is complicated work, it involves a certain level of diplomacy, and the search for the clues that would corroborate that theory may take some time to emerge."

He said the Scotland Yard team has been described as "minding the shop" while their Portuguese colleagues search for the illusive clues that would confirm the latest theory.

"I don't think the operation will go on indefinitely" he added.

"There's no time limit at the moment but the feeling is, if after a few months, this theory is not able to be stood up then the investigation will be wound up.

"But the money will give continuing hope to Madeleine's parents that there is still a chance of finding out exactly what happened to her."

This is beyond a joke. Too many unanswered questions, too many holes & contradictions in their story. They left their underage children unattended and should be charged for that, negligence of duty as parents. Can't see how anyone can defend that. Why are they untouchable ?! If they were from a council estate the outcome would have been very different.

How many kids go missing ? How much do they spend on other cases ? And still a big flow of cash for the McCanns ! So what is this latest theory.... maybe Aliens ?! And whatever did happen to the poor girl I think the McCanns know only too well the situation.
