When Georges Lemaitre published the first cosmic expansion theory in 1927, in french, he described an area of trillions of miles of space expanding - the cosmic egg theory, Hubble was given some of the credit two years later because his theory was in english.
over the years the initial size of the proto space contracted... millions of miles across exploding outward, then thousands...
until some smart cookie made it a singularity? the big bang theory never caught on to the sixties and it got smaller and smaller.
Horizon the science show went further - the 2010 show -  What Happened Before the Big Bang? narrated by Benard Hill.
in this episode they go further - many physicists now say the big bang did not happen? they have many new theories.
So is the big bang a placeholder for something that is unknowable?

have the physicists just been flapping their gums for 90 years?
will another theory displace it?
steady state model was the old concrete theory.
revise and revise.
