It was on the yesterday channel recently and although i have seen the crash before, never in such gruesome detail.
Probably the most horrific crash ever as one of the cars took off the ground at about 150 mph, went over the earth barriers and into the crowd in the grandstand. Think 84 people were killed many decapitated as the bonnet, rear axle and engine came apart on impact, with a ferocious fire burning as part of the car was made of magnesium!
Incredibly the race continued and Mike Hawthorn won it.
Well worth seeing if you get the chance.

Yes, I've seen it. It's absolutely horrific. Unbelievable that the race wasn't stopped.

Also kind of incredulous that Hawthorn died a few years later crashing his Jaguar whilst overtaking a Mercedes near Guildford on a public road, which were the same makes as he and Fangio raced each other in on that fatal day!

I don't remember that bit, but yes.

Hawthorn was dying from an incurable kidney disease, so maybe he had a sort of death wish approach to life and may have 'preferred' to go that way (apparently he was racing the driver of the other car, and they knew each other). Also saw the documentary some years ago Stewarts, it was a bit of an eye-opener wasn't it. Horrific as you say, and unbelievable that the race continued.

The lack of safety in those days is mind blowing. That incident is the main reason that I hate motor sports.

Bit of a rubbishing of mike Hawthorne-quite distasteful really
