Supporters of Britain’s membership of the European Union are to stage a protest march outside the next Conservative Party conference – with the stated aim of stopping Brexit.

The Manchester march will probably coincide with other mass protests against the conference – which have been a fixture of the party’s gatherings in recent years.

The protest, organised by Stop Brexit, will take place a month after another march on Parliament, staged by the People’s March for Europe group. Pro-EU activists have pledged an “autumn of discontent” against Brexit.

The Manchester march will begin on 1 October, the first day of the conference, and gather at Platt Fields. Speakers at the march’s rallies are expected to include former Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg and former Labour adviser Alastair Campbell.

Mr Clegg’s involvement is a major turnaround for the former Deputy Prime Minister, who previously served in a Tory-led cabinet. The Liberal Democrats are formally backing the march, arguing that they cannot “ignore the harm Theresa May’s Brexit will do to future generations”.

Peter French, of Stop Brexit, said: “This is our chance to actually let the people in the north of England have their voices heard because they have been neglected in every other way and this is a chance to give them their voice as well.

“And this is a chance to hopefully start to turn this around. Our aim is to actually stop the Brexit process and I think things are beginning to turn in that direction. We have a long fight on our hands but I think it is something that is achievable.”

Tom Brake, the Liberal Democrats’ foreign affairs spokesperson said: “Brexit is the battle of our lives and it is vital we make the Conservatives see the strength of feeling against their disastrous extreme Brexit, which threatens to crash the economy and damage the life chances of millions.

“They are heading for the very most reckless of Brexits in the teeth of public opposition to leaving the single market. Liberal Democrats didn’t take the decision lightly to protest at another party’s conference but we can’t ignore the harm Theresa May’s Brexit will do to future generations.

“Liberal Democrats on the march will protest peacefully and in good spirit but ministers should be under no illusions that a lot of people are very, very angry at their disastrous handling of Brexit, which has made a difficult situation a million times worse.”

Pro-EU protesters have held a series of marches across the country and in the capital since the EU referendum result. The protests have so far failed to change policy.

Will this 'Stop Brexit' protest group also be staging an identical rally outside the Labour Party Conference, given that Labour is also committed to Brexit?

Nearly 60% of the North voted to leave but nobody wants to listen to their voices.

Britain might have voted to remain in the European Union if just an extra three per cent of the population had been to university.

That’s according to new research from  the University of Leicester, which suggests access to higher education was the greatest factor dividing those who voted to remain and those who voted to leave the bloc in last year’s referendum.

Other noteworthy findings from the paper — titled New Findings on Key Factors Influencing the UK’s Referendum on Leaving the EU — include the revelation that a decrease in turnout of seven per cent across England and Wales could have reversed the result.

The research also found that sex was a statistically significant factor in how people voted, while British-born proportions and local income levels were not. The factor of elderly voters, meanwhile, did have an impact on the outcome of the vote but not to the extent it was reported.

Dr. Aihua Zhang, from the University of Leicester’s Department of Mathematics, said: “The EU referendum raised significant debate and speculation of the intention of the electorate and its motivations in voting.

“Much of this debate was informed by simple data analysis examining individual factors, in isolation, and using opinion polling data”.

“This, in the case of the EU referendum where multiple factors influence the decision simultaneously, failed to predict the eventual outcome. On June 23rd 2016, Britain’s vote to leave the EU came as a surprise to most observers, with a bigger voter turnout than that of any UK general election in the past decade”.

The researchers applied regression analysis and a statistical model to real data to identify statistically significant factors that influenced both voting preference and with it the outcome.

Further findings from the study include the suggestion that areas with a higher unemployment rate in England and Wales saw a higher rate of turnout in favour of Leave, while areas in Scotland and Northern Ireland with a higher-proportion of people who were university-educated saw an increased turnout for Remain.

In my day, only two percent of the population went to university, in recent years much greater numbers attended. Could it just be that the set of people of voting age who went to university have a lower average age than the set of those who didn't?
As you approach 50% of each annual class attending university, a much greater proportion of them are of average or near average intelligence. Intelligence becomes less of a factor in the younger sets than in the older sets.
