Their programme to re-educate the nation has certainly accelerated rapidly post Merkeltor. People are beginning to rebel at the preaching and positive racism. I have never heard so many people angry about the beeb.

Eastenders used to be the flagship show

1986 averaging 20.6 million per episode
1990 averaging 17 million
1995 averaging 14.5 million
2000 averaging 15.4 million
2005 averaging 10 million
2010 averaging 9.3 million
2015 averaging 7.1 million
2016 averaging 6.9 million

lowest audience figure last year was 4.8 million

By 2030 they should be down to 1 million viewers before the programmed is canned, imagine coronation street and other soaps will go the same way

I have to take issue there scandy. While corrie is a bit preachy these days, some of the characters and lines are worthy of Bennett. Eastenders is bilge.

snooker and darts used to get huge figures on bbc

i think folk must have had tv sets fixed onto one channel

we made a device for my grandad out of a cane from a fishing net
so he could turn his tv over to another channel when we were
not there to do it for him

how would he cope with hundreds of channels today with his stick?

I can remember someone buying an early remote control tv, handset had a 12 foot cable.

Coronation street viewing figures have always been pretty similar so eventually ratings will be so low it wont be worth it, I heard they're going to do 6 episodes a week? can't be interested in quality if you're doing that much.

It's not like the 90's anymore, when I first saw them most people only had 4 TV stations and no internet, now there's thousands of channels and the web, it was inevitable that soaps would eventually die out, probably got 15 years left MAX.

All that will remain are the hard core loyal fans or 'super corrie' fans as they're called.

Eastenders has always been incredibly depressing pap, when I watched them as a kid, I used to like Eastender's grittiness but eventually you realise at the end of each episode it was so full of doom, gloom and arguing you couldn't move from the sofa for a while because you felt so downLaugh Coronation street is more light hearted but how many times can each soap recycle the same of dated storylines. Not surprising everyone is now switching off and remember this is as the years have gone on and the viewers have declined the UK population has gone the other way which is even more telling.

I've also heard it said that people are uncomfortable with so many gay storylines, haven't seen them in years so don't know if this is true.

Might even be sooner than 15 years depending what other distractions will come are way of an evening.

It appears that all drama producers feel obliged to over-represent anyone who was previously under represented, it's a kind of moral penance. I'm now sick of hearing about minorities, and I'm sure others will be soon enough.

Back in the 70's getting fingerbummed by a BBC Star was like a badge of honour. Nowadays, if, I don't know, Nick Grimshaw tried noncing up by boys I'd give him a piece of my mind and offer them up to one of the nice chaps from Channel 4 like Kevin McCloud or that George chap with the sheds.

With the explosion in TV streaming, the BBC's demise may be closer than you think.
Report pxb July 21, 2017 12:37 AM BST
Netflix's cost is less than half the BBC license fee, and a BBC license isn't required to watch streaming content on your TV. A quarter of UK households have Netflix. I wonder how many of them stopped paying the BBC license.

I wonder how many people just watch streaming TV. The number of BBC licenses was still increasing as of 2016, although by a small number. I'd expect the number to start decreasing soon.
