For the good people who have crowdfunded £1.5 million for his case. What happens to their money if the legal bid is unsuccessful? Have the parents promised to return the money or are they going to keep it? Last week, when the judge quite reasonably asked for Charlie Garde's head to be measured, to settle a quibble, the parents walked out of court. Do you know how many people have to turn up in court to make it work? But, of course, they are not paying, crowdfunding is. I have an open mind but I wonder why they are still receiving donations.
if that is the case annie it would concern me greatly, this type of funding as well intentioned as it is should not go directly to the people involved but to a special account and be distributed as required.

Yeah, Annie, I share your concern. My experience of crowdfunding was a modest donation towards putting on a play, since we knew the writer and some of the players. It never happened, and we were too polite to ask for our money back. I'm not sure there is any redress. Wonder about the family still inviting donations, long after their own target was reached.

Never knew that Annie. Would put me off donating. BTW haven't both the Pope and Donald Trump said they would pay for this? If that's the case what's the funds for?

I don't know how these gofundme sites work, I would have thought if the money is being raised for charity, the money you raise is sent to the charity account, if the money is for personal use, i.e. cancer treatment of in this case specialist treatment, it would make sense to pay into the parents direct account given they are the one's who have to pay for the treatment and trips abroad
Is there even an option for a middleman account of sorts to repay excess amounts raised back to donators ? if not don't see what the problem would be.

There are 2 other ways to donate, PayPal and GoFundMe. Both these sites charge a processing fee. (From memory it's 5%). The 3rd option, bank transfer direct to the mothers account, is without cost.

Why are they asking for donations when everyone concerned as far as I am aware are donating their time and treatment free?
Charlie Gard is blind, deaf, brain damaged and cannot breathe without help.

well just found the gofundme page https://www.gofundme.com/please-help-to-save-charlies-life
and it says Connie Yates 921 Facebook Friends This person will receive your donation directly. All payments are final and cannot be refunded.
so People who are donating know the score regardless of the outcome of this case, though I agree it doesn't make it right if they have excess amount of funds and ultimately benefit financially from it, I am surprised there is not some kind of pay back scheme.
So far 1.3 million has been raised, also agree don't know why people keep donating if they have that much.

Thank you so much for visting Charlie's Shop! xx This shop was set up by Charlie's auntie Laura so that people can find all the lovely items made by Charlie's supporters in one place. Everything here is made by or sourced by the lovely people found on Charlie's Facebook group Charlie's Army. Profits from items sold are passed on to support Charlie and his family.

This story should have ceased being news some time ago. Blame the media.
The question of what happens to the money should definitely be asked. This whole issue, like some others which are all over the press, seems to me to show a huge lack of respect to people who are going through a similar horrible time, only quietly.

I think the parents were understandably deeply upset, clutching at straws, using social media and listening to the faux sympathy all over it. And, trying to use the press, who doubtlessly didn't discourage it, to get a solution to the unsolvable. No-one has had the bravery (that we've been told about - and possibly for fear of litigation) to tell them to stop it now. Or at least they've refused to listen.

Don't understand why this page is still accepting donations, and why people are still donating? some people have donated over 100 quid in the last hour, why? the fight is over so not sure what people are now contributing towards?
I think the media will probably ask in time about the money but know they would be lampooned if they did so now, it is relevant though, they are millionaires now after all, unless they donate it all to charity and just take what they have lost in work pay, funeral costs etc.

They had 2nd, 3rd and 4th opinions tmdm but refused to believe them. The lad has no quality of life and never will have. The kindest and most humane thing to do was let him die with dignity.

The 'expert' from America came to help, didn't he? It was an untested, unproven potential "treatment", which I think it's fair to assume wouldn't work. They were fighting for their boy, of course. Who wouldn't? It was the further opinions of several doctors and courts that they were disregarding in the vain hope that this American bloke could effectively have a cure! The mum was, a couple of weeks ago, talking about her boy growing up to ride a bike!
It's all very sad, but the stuff that people have to deal with every day.

The responses on here are not the same as on facebook, shrewd dude. The peer pressure and fashion to pay for every cause mentioned is a bit greater on facebook.

I haven't read about it on Facebook so I wouldn't know. It's just ironic criticising the media and saying it should have ceased being news ages ago on a new thread that was started a week ago after the other one with about a hundred posts dropped off the front page.

Sorry, I fail to see any irony. This isn't the media - we're not being paid to write or talk about this. It's not facebook and the style of this forum doesn't attract the "togetherness" that facebook does, nor does it provide any way of raising funds. As for another thread - I hadn't realised we were limited to just one!

Your not. If you want to post about something that you find newsworthy and worthy for discussion on social media then that's entirely your decision but it's again ironic that you also criticise other media for continuing to keep it in the news and a particular social media's generation for making the whole thing undignified.

By Media, shrewd dude, I mean the mainstream press. The TV and Radio and Newspaper journalists. The fact that it's been the lead item on TV news for most of the last 2 or 3 weeks.(chalk)
Because I find it wrong that this is kept so prevalent as a news item shouldn't and doesn't preclude me or anyone else here from talking about it. (cheese)

This could go on and on, s_d. I still can't see any irony. Where else can I write down what I think? I'm not using mainstream press, or posting on facebook. Just within a limited conversation in a place where no money is being raised and no-one is being paid. I think you're not understanding what I mean by "Facebook generation". I mean the outpouring of false emotion and needing to feel part of everything that spreads all over the place, no matter how unconnected people are to the actual event. 'Trending' or 'Top Story', getting everyone to wear a green ribbon, spreading the word and crowd-funding. None of which is the same as posting on here. You are somehow implying that because I dislike Facebook (and its adherents) that I shouldn't write anything online because it's hypocritical. Well, it isn't.
I'll try an analogy. Just because I don't think fish and chips shouldn't be served in paper and polystyrene, it doesn't become an irony that I'd want to nick one of your chips!

While we need to take account of the anguish of relatives and the need for hospitals to avoid criticism and lawsuits, I wonder if the elephant in the room is being addressed. How much of NHS resources should be spent on keeping alive vegetative patients? How long should intensive care facilities, which could be used to save critical patients with a chance of recovery, be blocked by apparently hopeless cases? Has anyone seen this issue debated in the press, I haven't heard it mentioned on TV.

There was no 10% chance for the child at any time. All that was ever said was that they might be able to reverse some of the damage. He would have remained blind, deaf and with substantial brain damage.
