15 years too late, the Guardian laments the departure of Angus Deayton. If he were still there, they'd attack the show for being stale, male and pale, or whatever the saying is.
Report saddo July 18, 2017 8:47 AM BST
Perhaps people have finally tired of the same jokes every show, viewing figures have gone down in recent weeks. No matter if it's days are numbered, plenty of BBC radio panel shows to employ em to do the same old stuff.
Report Poppydog. July 18, 2017 11:43 AM BST
Paul Merton staring into space continually, mumbling 6 or 7 indifferent lines of 'comedy' per show is surely a work of comedy genius, which we will all get, one day in the future.
Report scandanavian_haven July 18, 2017 12:15 PM BST
it's 10 years past its sell by date, angus much like Clarkson on Top Gear, were what made the show tick. Whether you liked them or not most wanted to hear their opinion because they were honest and honest in a funny way.
Report Jack Hacksaw July 18, 2017 12:22 PM BST
I am sure, for many, there is a big credibility gap.

We all know they know the questions beforehand, but sometimes the way the guests answer with the correct answer out of nowhere is cringeworthy - as is the embarrassment they clearly feel.
Report Foinavon July 18, 2017 12:32 PM BST
The last time they made me laugh was when Roy Hattersley failed to turn up and was replaced with a tub of lard.
Mildly interesting when Victoria Coren Mitchell is in the chair.

Paul Merton is about as funny as anal warts
Report Crisp77 July 18, 2017 2:38 PM BST
Was the article written by Angus Deayton?

Watched and enjoyed it for many years but stopped last year when it became apparent that all they were doing was propounding the BBC's leftwing bias Crazy
Report Torquemada July 18, 2017 3:53 PM BST
HIGNFY was once an excellent programme, it is now almost unwatchable it's so bad. Now just another lefty propaganda outlet for the BBC. Woeful and unfunny, Merton and Hislop have become what they once parodied.
Report cooperman July 18, 2017 4:04 PM BST
Merton and Hislop actually look embarrassed half the time knowing that the show is plumbing new depths but unable to refuse the money on offer.
Report Knight Commander July 18, 2017 4:41 PM BST
Read somewhere they pick up about £10K per episode Shocked
Report Ramruma July 18, 2017 7:11 PM BST
Aren't we due to find out what the BBC pays people? £10k sounds high, even though the regulars will be paid a lot more than the guests.

Years ago I thought it was the funniest show on tv ...the episode after angus got caught with the hooker was one of the funniest shows ever on tv
Report scandanavian_haven July 18, 2017 8:27 PM BST
I was always surprised at how merciless Merton and Hislop were on that first show after he was caught, wouldn't you have thought that really off air they were all friends and it was just a bit of an act to have constant digs back and forth, but seems they really hated him.
Report Ibrahima Sonko July 18, 2017 8:34 PM BST
Was one of my favourite shows in its first 5 to 10 years when it was very funny, not sure when it changed but it is one trick pony now.
Report Scamp the man July 18, 2017 8:56 PM BST
I think it changed when Angus left

Hislop seems to have lost his chin....that worries me.

Toss up between this and The Last leg to decide which formerly funny Friday night light entertainment show has disappeared furthest up it's own 'right on' backside.

Used to be great in their 'let's have a go at everyone and let God sort 'em out' approach but now?

'Trumps and idiot..... Farage and UKIP are idiots..... Brexit is wrong.....'

A programme that used to be never to be missed. A programme that is now always to be missed.
Report BARROWBOY July 19, 2017 3:10 PM BST
just the same as the news quiz on R4,scripted by smug liberal elite types, well past sell by date.
Report wit-ham July 19, 2017 7:11 PM BST
Always enjoyed it but not watched for 3/4 years now
everything has it's time
Report Just Checking July 19, 2017 7:26 PM BST
I used to love it, it and every other comedy show are now the same: Trump is bad, The Tories are bad, Brexit is bad, Brexit voters are racist .. "jokes".

There is a new current affairs comedy show being heavily advertised on the BBC starting tommorow, the Mash Report, does anyone expect it to not be the exact same unfunny totally predictable uninspired crud? No doubt anyone contributing will be carefully selected to exceed some diversity/gender quoatas.
Report zorrostrikes July 20, 2017 2:06 AM BST
Mash Report looks like a tame version of Frankie's program.
That was the week that was...
Is it just rehash BS, repeated over and over till a meteor hits the BBC.

Is there no way to breakout of this pattern?

they applaud it when a show runs for thirty or forty years?
I despair at it?
Eastenders
coronation street
Doctor who

the sky at night is at least a once the month event and it carries information, its valid. these soaps are insipid BS filler like wallpaper.

Still no movie station from the BBC? Ch4 can afford it?
