Perrett formed the Only Ones in 1976 with his wife Zena as manager.[1] After self-releasing their debut single "Lovers of Today", the band signed a recording contract with CBS Records and released three studio albums: The Only Ones (1978), Even Serpents Shine (1979), and Baby's Got a Gun (1980), before splitting up in 1982.

Perrett re-emerged in 1994 with a new band called The One. The band released their debut EP Cultured Palate via their manager's record label Dwarf Records, before signing to Demon Records and releasing their debut album Woke up Sticky in 1996. The band split up that same year, with Perrett disappearing again until April 2004 when he made an appearance on stage with the Libertines. He also appeared on stage with his sons Jamie and Peter Jr.'s band Love Minus Zero. Long hiatuses in his music career have been ascribed to his enduring struggles with heroin and crack cocaine addictions.[5][6]

The Only Ones reunited in 2007, following the use of "Another Girl, Another Planet" in a Vodafone advertising campaign and a subsequent request to perform at the All Tomorrow's Parties Festival in Minehead. The band first played a brief UK tour in April and June of that year, and then continued performing as far afield as Japan through 2009. Despite reports that the band was working on a new album and performing new songs live, including "Dreamt She Could Fly" and "Black Operations" (which the group played on Later... with Jools Holland), the band went on hiatus again without releasing any new material.

After the Only Ones performed in Japan in 2014 without their drummer Mike Kellie, a press release announced that Perrett would play a one-off solo date in England at the Trades Club in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire in January 2015.[7] Perrett played the gig to good reviews with his two sons performing as the backing band.[8]

In April 2017, Perrett announced his debut solo album, How the West Was Won, released on June 30 via Domino.[9]

Never heard of him. Just played how The West Was Won, sounds like a Velvet Underground tribute.

Saw the Only Ones playing at some venue in Windsor back in the 1970s. They really were very, very good, because for all of Perrett's druggieness, the three musicians were very tight, seasoned pros. They could all have had proper, long careers in the business, but came together because Perrett's material was so good. Both live and on the first couple of LPs the band was outstanding. It was just Perrett who couldn't hold it together.

There were plenty of a Doors tributes among the material, as well as Velvets ones. Breaking Down off the first LP could have been a bonus track off LA Woman.

Mike Kellie who died earlier this year was still drumming until recently.  Used to live in a flat above where I was crashing in Forest Hill c. 1980.

Just googled Forest Hill and Peter Perrett was listed as a notable resident.

A flat underneath the drummer out of the Only Ones wouldn't have been my choice of pad to crash at. But, hey, we were all younger back then.

It wasn't the best of arrangments.  It was a friend of friends and he didn't have a shower or bath there.  He showered where he worked but I had to ask borrow the bath of the German
girl downstairs!  Not as exciting as it may sound.  There was some gas water heater thing that I was sh1t scared of.

I didn't hear any drumming.  But it may well have been drowned out by the sound of my 'landlord's' Abba greatest hits.

I really like the 'How the west was won' album but Saddo ain't wrong; if Lou Reed were still alive he would be suing PP for ripping off 'Sweet Jane' on the title track. Having said that, it's a very good rip off and I really like his version of 'Sweet Jane' with an ode to Kim Kardashian's arse thrown in for good measure.
