I've been to Albufeira a few times albeit on golfing trips, it's a perfect family holiday destination imo. The beaches are immaculate, lovely seafood and generally a very relaxing environment. Also have a look at Madeira as well, no lager louts and a very tranquil ambience. It's worth going to Funchal just to view the approach to the airport! Those that have been there as well will know what I mean.

The 'Old Town' is OK for a holiday, and a lot safer - But the 'New Town' has developed a reputation for muggings, pickpockets etc - by both Brazilians and Eastern Europeans - most especially after dark, which is earlier than here.
Avoid Montechero area - which is opposite side of main road through the New Town from the Beach side.
Have a check on a map, before you book any accommodation.
All the beaches anywhere along the 55 miles of Algarve coat - from Prais da Luz (furthest away from Airport) in the west to Faro (Airport) in the east are great for kids.

I've not been there but have heard that it's pretty rough.
A mate of mine was staying further along the coast and decided to get a taxi to Albufeira one night to check out - He says his missus got out of the taxi and pretty much jumped straight into the next one to go back again!

It must have gone down the nick pretty sharpish then. I lived in Albufeira for 3 years. 2000 to 2003. Never saw, or heard of any trouble whatsoever. Great place (apart from walking up cardiac hill) ..... Avoid people with free scratch cards, it's timeshare
