When did British schools begin having 'proms' ?

i saw that more than five years ago? another adopting usa tradition that gets into your family's pockets? like fathers day and mothers day. it''s more money for an ego trip.

Think it started about fifteen years ago bit like when did Halloween become popular. Another American tradition best left in America. Anyway got to go, got to put the bunting up for the 4th of July

Schools started to be turned into academies under the Blair government, or possibly the Thatcher government. I can't remember which of them first used the term. Basically it was supposed to drive up standards by removing schools from local authority control. It did not work.

Some schools were called academies before then but that is just a coincidence.

The abuse of language in these matters is appalling- a result of warped PC mentality.
What's next ...prisons to be re-designated campuses or maybe Rehabilitation Institutes?

And school busses became yellow?

Tackiness sells because it's cheap, we've imported Halloween and Black Friday as well, not long before we're all celebrating Thanksgiving too

If I was still of school age I would be too embarrassed to say to anyone "I'm going to the prom tonight"

why are we sucking in american culture. why don't we do a swim in the thames, like the ganges festival - or use coloured powdered paints and throw pigments over everyone.

The University of Life and Hard Knocks (Wormwood Scrubs Campus) sounds good... less stigmatising imo.

Same thing, I suppose. Everyone promenades/walks in front of the Head and gets their certificate.

If that's not what happens at these things, then I haven't a clue.

I don't know what we would have done at Slough Grammar School for Boys, had these prom things existed in those days. Sat around a Watney's Party Seven reading the Mayfair letters page, I suppose.

All I wanted to do the day I finished school was turn around, walk away, and never have anything to do with the place or the people in it ever again. Seven years of boredom and misery, there was never a morning when I didn't get off the bus, turn the corner and pray the buildings had been reduced to cinders by an overnight fire.

The last thing in the world I would have wanted was to meet all those dozy gits one more time for a sodding party.

But then again, this was 1979. There were bands to see, guitars to learn, songs to write ... Maybe the world outside doesn't look so exciting to a seventeen-year-old now. Perhaps a prom does feel more exciting than being herded into a field that's not actually anywhere near Glastonbury, in order to watch the very same bands four decades on, while applauding a 68-year-old professional politician.

Pretty sure Proms are only held in mixed sex schools.

I first heard of them when a neighbour's son opposite had one when he was 16 and a stretched limo turned up outside their house and 20 of his friends got in.

So I guess it was 2009 when I first came across it.
