After looking for a solution online, this looks far from straightforward from what I can gather - the options/instructions are different to what's on my laptop
and being quite thick with technology, I'm struggling with what I thought would've been a simple matter.

I want to get everything off the laptop but I haven't got a disc to reinstall...has anyone got some easy to follow advice I can follow to get it back to square one?
Thanks in advance.

PS - it's Windows 8.1

FWIW it helps if you aim off to one side. HTH.

Is the OP aware that the police can still recover deleted images?

Alpha - thanks for trying...but the links like that I saw were unhelpful as for some reason the suggestions were incompatible with my laptop.

Anyhow...it's sorted now and miraculously, I stumbled upon the solution myself Surprised

This might just help someone else...I thought I'd get rid of the startup icons which were overloading the toolbar, and when I searched my computer for that
I noticed a reset option.
It took about 10 minutes or so and now everything's just swell - I'm chuffed with my jenius(sic) Crazy

Just overwrite the entire drive with scooby doo videos.
copy the same one and rename until your whole drive
has scooby vs the ghost of brigton woods.

then when it gets down to 1 gbyte free space, fill the
drive with photos of the police commissioners granny.

no investigation will progress.
