Hi everybody just a quick question I was looking at purchasing a new laptop originally I was looking towards a Mac the more I look the more I think that they're not overly great value for money. I was wondering if anybody had any decent shouts within the 400-50 quid mark. It's mainly going to be used mainly for using Excel with studying obviously Apple doesn't usually offer the Office software pre installed which is why I'm looking towards a windows at the moment. The only thing that I noticed as my brother has a Mac is that Apple usually do last longer IMO so preferably a laptop with decent battery power as in the past mind have faded within a year.

Any opinions would be appreciated thanks

Maybe check Dell Outlet, it's say ones they've sent out that were returned but are in good/perfect condition.

Thank you Delta Laugh. AFC, I wouldn't know one brand from another, but have bought an Acer Aspire E15, cost about £360 last Autumn and does everything I need. I don't know what Excel is, so can't help you there.

just download MS Office from a torrent site. Otherwise use Google Docs.

Do you need Excel or do you need a spreadsheet? If the latter, then you will save a pile of money by buying a chromebook and using the free Google apps. The Mrs paid more for a 5 year anti-virus subscription for her Windows computer than I did to buy my chromebook, which doesn't get viruses. However chromebooks won't run bf 3rd party apps, but are fine for the bf browser interface. I have been using one to access bf for the last 7 years.

Yes. The fact that Gruss, for example, only runs on Windows is a real pain. If it weren't for that, I'd have ditched this Windows laptop years ago and used just the Chromebook.

Nobody needs to buy or use any anti virus software on windows, just switch on Windows Defender it's the only thing you need, don't give money to the companies that are making the viruses in the first place - what would an anti virus company be without viruses ? - bust.

any torrent experts on here?  I've got a new Macbook so want to download some of the software I had on my old Mac. I've tried uTorrent and Transmission but so far they're not finding any peers - downloading doesn't even start (stuck on 0%). I think it might have something to do with Sierra which is the latest version of OS on my new Mac, cos it still works no problem on my old Mac (which is an older OS - Yosemite).

TheBaron is correct, AV firms do not create viruses to generate business.

WOW,85 posts in 10 years, yeah you have a great track record in being correct, like he said, prove it!.

don't use a mac but try here platini http://alternativeto.net/software/wps-office/?platform=mac

To Marcus, When you google "do anti virus companies make viruses" you can see they've done a good job of keeping the positive reviews in their favour at the top of the searches, but if you dig a bit deeper...

Jesus he asked for a laptop recommendation not to be advised to get some linux rubbish or extremely bad advice tin foil hat conspiracy madness about viruses and where they come from. Next you'll be saying it was AVG who infected the NHS and 9/11 was done by the illuminati.

Rule #1 about internet club. Never ask for advice on internet club.

Get windows 10 (though I prefer windows 7 if you can deal with fact they might drop support sometime). Windows 10 S is apparently locked down to windows appstore and I wouldn't touch it. If you don't want to shell out for Excel, try open office or libre office for free. I've used calc (Excel) and for normal stuff it's fine as long as there isn't scripting and it has a fair bit of Excel file compatibility, you can try it now on any windows computer to get a feel. Open/Libre office write (word) is less compatible for complex documents but kind of ok.

Laugh JC,  AVG  have been selling data, no such thing as a free lunch.
